Hello. Yesterday, I was cleaning out my garden and my rake hit something that squeaked. I looked and saw it was two baby bunnies. Today, I checked on them and one was left decapitated outside his/her burrow. I told my dad and he said the poor bunny that was left couldn’t stay there or he’d kill it so I moved it to an old burrow beside my house. The burrow is about 30 feet from its original. I read something online that a mother rabbit would call to its young but I’m not sure if it would notice it from 30 feet away. The baby is extremely young and doesnt even have her eyes open. Any suggestions? I don’t want the little sweetheart to die.

If one baby was killed, there are two likely options: the mother killed it out of stress, or there is a predator nearby who killed it. With either option, the second baby is likely to follow in similar fashion, no matter how far you move it away. If at all possible, it would be best to take the baby to a wild life rehab center.

I think a wild life rehabbed would be the only viable option in this case. It is sometimes possible to rear a motherless bunny on KMR and cream, but the chances of success are slim.
I assume what your father had in mind when he said he’d kill the bunny was a mercy killing. It is true that a bun that young would not survive on its own. It would soon die of hypothermia or be taken by a predator.

Yes, wildlife rescue or rabbit rescue. We are fortunate to have one about an hour away. We had to take two cottontail babies there once. I don’t think your little one will stand a chance otherwise. I’m actually 99.99999999% positive that it doesn’t have a chance, especially with the one already violently killed and you having to move the second.

                – I’m hoping that is what dad was meaning too, mercy (albeit not so subtly).

                @ sarahthegemini – ……..you know……..  More specifically….you know what I’m saying *wink, wink, grin*

Thanks guys! I took her yesterday and they said they’d keep my up to date!

P.s. my dad is actually that cruel. I’ve seen him beat a baby mouse to death with a shovel as it writhed in pain. He doesn’t know we took her to the wildlife center xD

Ummm….just wow. Thanks for saving the little one. Don’t even know what to say about your father. I’m glad you didn’t inherit his disposition.

                    Really, good job!

Well done on getting the baby to a wildlife carer, that’s a great outcome. That’s great they’re going to keep you up to date. Let us know how it goes if you can
