This evening we were doing yard work…yes in 80+ degree weather
We have a garden box that we’re not using that has weeds and really high grass in it. I go around the back and my husband is starting to cut some of it down with hedge trimmers. He’s moving around and all of the sudden we hear a squeak and then another one
Then we realize what it was ![]()
He was right above a bunny nest! He saw the clearing but didn’t think twice and I even thought earlier if there was a nest there but forgot
So he quickly got out of the box. I had gloves on so I said I’d find the nest and make sure they were ok. I pulled up this huge pile of fur over them and OMG they are so cute! I think they were squeaking to warn him or they sensed someone near. They were all moving and seemed to be ok *sigh of releif* There must be a dozen or more in that nest it was huge! There has been a bunny around our yard but I thought it was a boy since I didn’t see a dew lap and it didn’t seem that big but I guess that was the mother. She is pretty friendly too because I’ve gotten really close to her. I’ll check on them again tomorrow to make sure they’re ok. I’ll have to try to get a picture of them. The one little one on the top saw me and he squirmed his way to the bottom. They look like they might be ready to leave the nest soon, the little white mark on them disappeared I think.
I’m pretty sure this is the mother, it’s the same rabbit that’s been hanging around our house. This was right next to our front steps:

awww I love baby bunnies! My cat brought me one once. I think she thought it was a kitten or something. She carried it in her mouth and meowed at the door until I came. I had to put the poor scared little thing in a carrier until morning and then let it go in the back yard. It was old enough to hop and run. My vet said it probably didn’t live though. Once an animals saliva has entered a wound on them, though I didn’t see any puncture marks on it, the animals don’t do well or he said sometimes it’s the shock of being captured. Poor thing!
Anyway, be sure to post pictures if you can get some ![]()
you do know why she’s hanging around your door right??
She’s a single mother, with 12+ kits, no job, no house, SHE’S BEGGING YOU FOR FOOD!!!
“good day maa’m, spare a few pellets, eh?”
Tis the season it seems! The cottontails have wisened up to where all the bunny lovers live. Can’t wait to see more pics if you can manage them.
Here’s the nest! I just took it this afternoon. I believe the mother was here last night because the nest was packed in better than yesterday. They are so cute! They were all squirming around, the one seemed like it was trying to hop (or it was sneezing, I couldn’t tell). Since the nest wasn’t as loose as yesterday I couldn’t really count them…I didn’t want to disturb them. But there were about 4 on top and more on the bottom ![]()

Oh they are so cute! Those wittle ears! Squee!!! Good to hear that Momma bun is coming around!![]()
S.Q.U.EEEE!!!!!! so so cute… ![]()
Oh, such cuties.. so tiny ![]()
*grabby hands* gimme gimme gimme cute cute cute!!
they look almost rexy.. :p
Just giving you guys an update on the nest. Everybun seems to be fine. I check on them every day. They started opening their eyes yesterday and today the one looked at me like “It’s not dinner yet leave me alone to sleep”
Still can’t tell how many there are. Maybe I can get some more pictures before they leave the nest. There about 5+ inches long; I’m guessing.
What do ya mean “Maybe” get more pics?! *pokes*

Well since you insisted hehe!
I just went out to check on them, I guess it rained a little before I went out, they’re a little wet. We saw momma bun yesterday in our driveway eating clover.

They are so big! And so many of them! So cute!![]()
So cute!
I tried counting them today and I counted 7 although one could have been hiding. They all looked at me and I even petted one. They’re getting so big, soon they’ll be leaving the nest ![]()
OMG!!!! They are soooo cute!!!! Those little ears! Thanks for the baby bunny fix!
HOW CUTE!!! I didn’t know that rabbits kept their young in nests. They look so cozy all packed in there. Thanks for sharing! ![]()
More pictures!! They were very calm when I opened the nest today and I even petted them
There are 6 total in the nest.

And get ready for some baby bun cuteness!!
Oh they are so cute!![]()
I WANT I WANT I WANT!!!!!
Well last night we had a thunderstorm and it rained quite a bit. So this morning I went to go check on the nest to see if they were ok. I saw the top lower than normal and was hoping it was just moved a little but when I opened it up it was empty
I thought it would be at least another week until they leave because they looked so small. I guess momma bun took them back to the warren. Hopefully I’ll see them in our back yard soon. I’ll keep an eye out for them and let you know. I’m a little sad I don’t get to see those cuties and pet them but I’m sure we’ll have another nest next year.
Awww, now that one bunny has left her mark in your yard, I hope another one comes next year!
The video is SO CUTE!! It looks like you touched one and it looked like the bunny went “OH! Hoomin touched me, so I must make myself camoflagued and hide between the siblings!! EEEK!!!”
Awww they are so cute!! I love the middle one “Hide me guyz, I don’t wanna get pet by the hooman!”
Yesterday we were leaving our house and found this little one by our front steps! They got so big since they left the nest!
Little guy was eating all of our weeds (I knew we didn’t pull them out for a reason
). I think it was eating more than mine usually does.

When we came back home we found a cat by our driveway and I ran out of the car and chased it around the house.
I think it had just got there so it didn’t get to hunt anything. Ugh….I’m sorry I just don’t like any stray cats or other people’s pets in our yard, esp. when there’s cute little bunnies running around. I’ll leave it at that since another topic had that discussion before and don’t want to get this topic heated at all.
I suspect cat & bunny lovers may have done the same thing knowing there were baby cottontails nearby. You must have been happy to see them doing well. Thanks for the update and piccies!
I’ve heard of a plant that can repel cats but I don’t know if it’s bunny safe. It’s called “Scardey Cat”. Lavendar is another option.
Eeks!!! So! Cute! Eek!!!
