Hello all BB members!
It’s been a long time since I’ve posted so this may be a long one. Hang in there.
My sweet babies Tonne and Kahleigh are now a little over 1 year old (Their birthday was Feb 2), and gearing up to get their spay/neuter day done. It’s scheduled for early morning March 15th. I am so nervous to part ways with my little ones. But what I’m most nervous about is the after care. Kahleigh is a very energetic girl so I’m extremely worried about her trying to pull on her stitches or tearing something. How long after surgery do you usually need to watch female buns very closely for things of this nature? I do have a training for my work the next weekend, the 24th and 25th I will be away during the day which is not usually the case. I’m wondering if this will be of concern? Or will she have done most of her healing by then? Also, anything you can do to make the ride home from the vet more comfy for them? It will be about a 1 hour car ride back home from the vet. Any experiences with female flemmie spays at about 1 year old?
Any input is greatly appreciated ?
I don’t have experience with Flemish giants but I have two bunnies who were spayed Monday. Most vets use glue or a special cone so they cant reach it. My bunny Lily is very energetic. My vet did stitches that are on the inside so she cant pull them out. Make sure you get pain meds. The pain meds where supposed to be included in my bunnies spays but we didn’t get any. When we requested some they said rabbits don’t need them. I just spent an additional $65 to get an exam at a closer vet. Feed your bunnies up until the surgery. If your bunny isn’t eating after surgery, feed them with a syringe. Their gut has to keep moving. That is all the info I really know
I don’t have experience with 1 year old flemmie spays… that’s pretty specific!
But I had my rabbit spayed at about 7 months old. They should be mostly recovered by 10 days after the spay, and it’s best to keep them confined for the first week.
I would just put a fleece or blanket in the carrier – they’ll probably be pretty sleepy after the surgery anyway.
Hey WRX !!!!!!!!!!! Where ya beeeen ?! Missed you !!!!!!
I need PHOTOS before i can help you….. lol
Zou is not a flem, but a big girl (6kg) and she was done at 2. She was brought home the same day and was Sooooo out of it in the car she wouldnt have known if it was 10 mins or one hour…. lol
I wish I’d kept a more detailed journal to advise after as I have a memory of Dory…. but i know my main concern was getting her to eat (rose petals) and then she was up and about after a few days. I kept her in a dog cage for atleast a week i think.
Her bandage was really good so she couldn’t get to her wound it but i prevented her jumping her anywhere !
PHOTOS PLEEEEEEASE xxxx
Oh and dont forget the hot water bottle wrapped up in fleece or towel for the first day until she is up and moving herself !!!
Yayyy!!! Viennas here! I was so hoping I’d here from you! How have you been??? I have so been missing all of your bun encouragement! It’s been such a long road to get to their spay/neuter date. I have so many cute pics to share I will start a whole thread! Most recently was their birthday and that was soooo cute! I made a carrot cake for my husband and I of course lol. Tonne and Kahleigh both got to open birthday presents and we got lots of pictures of them with their adorable birthday hat on! Lol
That is really good to know i was worried she was going to be up and trying to chew out stitches on the ride home as it may be only me picking her up as opposed to my husband and I both going when we drop them off. We luckily got them both booked for the same time, same day. So far i have set it up for her to be on carpet with a soft fleece bedding draped on it, in a large Xpen. She wont have anything to jump on as her cage will be sized down and her castle of boxes will no longer be in there. I’m hoping to get her a lower sided litter box since hers is pretty tall. I will have to make sure and get her a nice hot water bottle and i will probably sew her a fleece cozy for it before she goes in. I will have to check out what sort of bandage they put on her afterwards. As far as making sure she eats, i will have her favorite veggies on hand. I also have the apple banana oxbow critical on hand, although i do need to get some feeding syringes. I am just sooo hoping I’m ready! I’m so nervous to just leave her with the vet!
Well at least you’re leaving them together…. so thats good for them.
Oh ho hoho. I had ALL her faves waiting for her when she got home… did she want ANY of them? Nope !!
I had to go lurking around the neighbourhood at night, cutting off one rose in each front garden which had a rose bush (didnt want to strip one house of all their roses).
Rose petals and leaves. Perfect.
Good luck. Cant waaaaaait to see the photos !!
Make sure they eat right up until you take them in!! No fasting!!! Save something special for them to have just before so they have something as late as possible…
Make sure they can get away (roll away!!) from hottie if necessary….
(((( Come on girls )))))
How are the girls after their spay (yesterday?)….??
((((( have your first nibble girls ))))
Ha ha!!!! Oh my!! I just keep imagining going around collecting yummies from all my neighbors gardens! lol I’m sure my babies would LOVE that! That’s a great way to make sure your bun eats! The bun belly wants what it wants! ?
I do apologise. I have no idea why i keep thinking you have 2 girls. So sorry, Tonne xxxx ![]()
Ha ha it’s okay! Oh boy I’m glad I don’t have 2 girls! Kahleigh is a handful on her own! He is way more relaxed! Although I guess they acted the opposite at the vets office!
Ah you see. Based just on MY two monster buns, Zou is sooooooooo much more chilled and it is Henry who is the handful !!! ![]()
It’s so funny how 2 buns can have such different personalities even though they live in the same place and have the same sort of life. Those big buns have big personalities!
