Flemish Giant Ate ENTIRE rubber band bracelet! 47 Minimum Mini Rubber Bands!

Ever heard of the Rainbow Loom? Its a kit that letts you make bracelets outt of mini rubber bands and my brother knocked his “Waterfall”or “Triple Single” bracelet on the ground, and no one noticed. So I’m sitting there and I hear a weird squeaky sound, look over, and my bunny has the very end of the bracelet hanging out of his mouth! I got that away from him but couldn’t get the rest of them out of his mouth so he ate the entire thing INCLUDING the “s-clip” which is a plasttic thing that holds the bracelet together. He seems okay now but I really doubt this is something I shouldn’t worry about! I’m [MOD EDIT] a minor and my mom just keeps saying “What do you want me to do about it??” We should take him to the vet right? HELPP.

If you think we should take him, then please leave something emphasizing the importance of this because she won’t listen to me but may listen to you guys with more experience.

I hate to say it but yes you need to take the rabbit to the vet. I’m going to be honest with you,dear. You are young and need to be much more cautious and aware of where your bunn is and what they are doing. Rabbits are a very high maintenance pet and take a lot of effort, time, and money. It breaks my heart when I hear a story like this because in the end the poor bunny suffers the most. Keep track of the bunny’s litter box visits and droppings and his eating and hay intake. If the bunny only ingesting a small amount of something it shouldn’t, most of the time it isn’t much to worry about, just keep your eyes on him. Good luck dear.

How long ago did this happen?

It’s important to remember that rabbits are prey animals and hide discomfort/pain/illness really well. So if you notice anything “off” or lethargy, ect… You’re entering “emergency territory” and medical treatment needs to be sought ASAP. Clean out his cage/litter box so you can monitor that he’s pooping and his gut is still moving. Make sure he has lots of hay and water. Call a vet and see what they suggest. If they suggest you bring him in have them talk to you mom and explain why.

First things first. Clean out the litter box right now. This way you can monitor his poop. Give him lots of hay and veggies. Wet the veggies down too to entice more fluids. My bun ate 20 something remote buttons and came out just fine so hopefully he will pass this easily. When you notice he stops eating or pooping, it warrants a vet visit. But for now, I’d do the wait and see approach.

Clean the box DAILY to monitor if he’s continuing his poops. Do this for about… Hmmm 3-4 days I guess. Just be on high alert for now.

She’s aware she made a mistake, even we adults fall into mishaps with buns. Like Sally eating my remote. But in the future you can learn from it. Like me with the remote lol

Thank you all for your suggestions, I’ve done every one of them except for the taking him to the vet bit. He seems okay for now, hes eating and drinking and even pooped out a couple pellets. He seems kind of tired though so I’ll continue to keep a close eye on him. We might call the vet tomorrow and see what they say. It happened around 20 minutes before I posted this so around 1:45 or so. Accidents happen to everyone! My mom keeps suggesting we put vegetable or olive oil in his food to help it “come out easier” but I don’t think we should risk it. It could do more harm than good. Does anyone know about this?

I wouldn’t attempt to give your bunny any laxative like substances unless directed to do so from a vet.

But seriously, you’ve gotten great advice. Keep a close eye on him tonight and in the morning, and be prepared to take him in to the vet tomorrow if his behavior warrants it.

Do you have an established rabbit vet? Has he been seen for exams in the past?

A friends son nearly died at Xmas due to one of the rainbow loom bracelets… His sister made him a bracelet and he was in bed and playing with it, the little plastic clasp came off at high speed flew down his throat and lodge in his lung. Thankfully Jen walked in a second later when she heard him gasping, saw the remains of the bracelet and figured out what had happened.

Hi, as the others have said, accidents happen and bunny proofing everything, especially with brothers with toys around, is really difficult. I would recommend a visit to the vet today no matter what, because the vet may want to take an xray to see if anything is still lodged in a place that will make it hard to pass. But in the meantime, follow the advice given and keep monitoring your bunny’s behavior, eating and poos. I may be totally wrong, but I can’t help thinking that a Flemish Giant, being larger, has a better chance of passing the small items without harm than a smaller rabbit might. But those digestive tracts are delicate, so I really think a vet visit is called for. I agree – do not do any home remedies first. Veg. oil isn’t even recommended, so you need to have medical advice. There are home remedies that are OK, but a vet will know those as well.

@Newbunnyowner123: you need to use Sally’s front, left paw for volume, front right for changing the channels, and tail to turn off the TV.

Obstruction is really the only danger, the bands are nontoxic silicone. I would not give oil, just high fiber foods.

Porky once ate a chunk of his silicone treat dish, it passed with out incidence. I spent a week paying way more attention to his litter box than usual.

I had a cat who loved rubberbands too. The first one we rushed her off to the vet and the vet found our completely healthy tiny kitten amusing. That cat lived another 6 years, when she managed to eat another rubberband unobserved. This time she wasn’t as lucky. Since we didn’t know she ate it, we didn’t know why she was sick. The xrays and ultrasounds the vet ordered didn’t show a blockage, so even though he suspected one he didn’t want to risk anesthesia on a very sick cat for a wild goose chase. He found the rubberband when he did a necropsy.

Luck has a lot to do with it, Hopefully you have a lucky bunny and it will pass with out issue.

Charlie is doing just fine now! He seemed a little more tired than usual on the first day but now hes back to his normal self. His pooping habits have been at the normal excessive rate they always have been. Id say the rubber bands have passed smoothly and im so grateful. And to answer you question, no we dont have an established vet. Charlie is to new to our house this month and his previous caretakers never mentioned any past vet tripss

I’m glad he made it =) If you’re in the US, the House Rabbit Society is a good place to start looking for a vet. Now you know you are going to need one lol!

Glad to hear he is back to normal! Yes, definitely start researching for a vet. He should have a check up for his benefit and yours. It’s highly important to get any rabbit checked shortly after they come to your home regardless of their age. Watch those rubber bands though!
