Fleas

I have been treating my rabbit for fleas for the past two months but I am concerned that she is still infested.    Is there anything else I can do to make sure she isn’t getting them over and over?  She has been getting Revolution every 30 days.  She still has a lot of flea dirt on her head and face but nowhere else on her body.  Could it just be left over from the original infestation?  Am I just over-reacting because I’ve never dealt with this before?

Hi there, I’m not 100% sure how long the treatment takes for it to kill off a full life cycle, eggs and all. However you do need to be sure that you are preventing re-infection from other sources. Fleas sometimes come in on hay and can hide in blankets/carpet etc for a short time so you need to clean the environment as well as treating your bunny. If you find fleas in the hay I would throw it out and get another bag/bale.

Making sure no fleas are hiding in carpeting, blankets, etc. is very important because your bun can be easily reinfested. Also, it’s important to note that Revolution is metabolized faster by rabbits, so it wears off before 30 days has passed. This make reinfestation even easier if the environment hasn’t been thoroughly cleaned. For carpeting, you can use diatomaceous earth to kill the fleas and their eggs. Sprinkle it on and let it sit for as long as you can (preferably a few hours) and then vacuum thoroughly. Keep bunny out of the area while it’s down. Although it isn’t toxic, the fine dust particles can irritate the lungs if they stick their noses on it and accidentally inhale it.
