Hi everyone! Today I found a flea on my bun, Jasper, along with some flea dirt. I am 100% positive it was a flea (went through this with my dog a few weeks ago). I already have been using a flea comb and I am going to brush him out every day in hopes of finding the flea (crossing my finger that there’s only one or very few!!!) and hoping to get rid of them that way. Does anyone have any DIY solutions that might work for getting rid of fleas? I am very hesitant about using medication – I would much rather try to get rid of them myself first. Thanks!

If you see flea dirt, there is probably more than a single flea. The safest method is to use revolution or advantage. Fleas cause illness, so it’s best to get rid of them before other problems arise due to them.

Honestly I wouldn’t even bother trying to get rid of them with just a flea comb. I’ve used Revolution (and will continue to use) on things as small as mice/rats with absolutely no issues. Especially with something like fleas where you may not see any evidence of them on your animal for awhile and may think they’re dead and gone until they’re absolutely everywhere again in a few weeks/months. It’s just much less hassle to get rid of them and know they’re gone. Make sure you also dose your other animals as well if it’s fleas, they can move to other animals and the infestation will just never go away.

Revolution or Advantage kitten formula is really the best thing to use on your rabbit to rid it of fleas. You also have to vacuum the area every day, since fleas only live on the animal at certain times, and other times they are hiding in carpets or upholstery.

There is one DIY solution that may help in conjunction with the Revolution. It is to make a flea trap. It should trap and kill fleas, as well as monitor the number you have, but it won’t eliminate the problem on its own. You take a shallow pan and put an inch or two of water in it, along with a few drops of dish detergent. Then you put the pan under a light of some kind – a lamp, a nightlight, etc. Fleas will be drawn to the light, then go into the water and drown due to the dish detergent. You would have to make sure that your rabbit and any other pets couldn’t get to the pan.
