flea shampoo

Hey all Can someone recommend a flea shampoo for a cat that has worked for them? We”ve tried frontline and advantage, but this poor kitty can’t shake the fleas. She’s also a fat cat, not sure if that’s making treating her harder or not. Thought I’d give a bath a shot (she could use one anyways lol)

My suggestion would be to try Comfortis. Advantage and such never works for my mom’s house, because she can’t keep the fleas out of her yard (the neighbors don’t treat theirs), but the comfortis destroys the fleas quickly. You also want to treat any clothes, carpet, etc the cat has had access to. Weight shouldn’t make it harder to get rid of fleas.

I’ve never had flea shampoos work, we tried every one we could find. I’ve had success with a few flea dips.

Oooo we have had some issues with Comfortis causing seizures in cats… Not sure if you have had the same problem in the states..
I use Revolution or Advocate, for the big kids they get the 4kg+… So you might need to make sure you are getting the correct dosage for your moggie.
Also see if the vet has a better option like an injection ? I use to bath my Mainecoon Cat before spot on treatments were available and it was a never ending cycle.. If you can find a treatment that works without having to start bathing I would take that option.
That your cat is also around your bunnies I would stick to treatments that are also bunny safe just in case there is any transfer (No Frontline) also check the areas she is napping in to make sure she is not reinfesting from a large colony somewhere in the garden. (Which is something I went through a few years ago. The neighbours backyard was the source of all fleas in the universe :/

Comfortis can make existing seizure conditions worse, but in the studies they have not found it to cause seizures in healthy animals (and to cause them in animals with existing conditions, they had to over dose them). Vets won’t give it if the animal has a history of seizures though. My mom uses it on her dogs and cats – five dogs, seven cats and no side effects. Vets still prescribe it often enough for healthy animals here.

Each of the flea medications do have risks though. Advantage caused very bad frothing at the mouth and vomiting in one of our dogs. Sentinel caused vomiting and lethargy. It is really scary when they have a reaction to them.

Many of them are designed to stop the flea biting rather than kill. It allows egg laying and reinfestation from a yard, or anywhere else fleas stay. Which is why sometimes it seems like they do not work, they just keep picking up new fleas that then have to wait days to die off and it gives them time to pick up more new fleas. It is a vicious cycle to try to break. My dog was allergic to fleas and would get horrible scabs all over her body if she even had a couple. I hated those things! They can be a pain to get rid of.

I found that Revolution works really well on fleas. I’m not sure about a flea shampoo. But I have done the lemon bath method to get rid of fleas on a ferret and that works really well. We gave him a regular bath first to get as many of the eggs out as can be. Then we did the lemon bath. I would try to see if there is some where that your poor kitty is picking them up from. Treating the spot will help reduce the risk of your cat getting fleas again.
