First time dealing with GI Stasis HELP

I rushed my bun Castiel to the emergency vet on Friday because he was straining to go and nothing was coming out. (Also his bond mate Lilly passed away that day) he seemed to get better over the weekend but he’s not pooping or eating now. I took him to a normal vet yesterday and she changed the meds he was on. (He was on Cipraside, Bunrenorphine and subq plasma lyte now he’s on metals and sung plasma lyte) I’m giving him Papya enzymes and lactobacillus as well. The vet yesterday checked his pee for infection because it smells and looks odd. Waiting for results. I’ve had 8 bunnies and never one in such severe GI stasis.
His bum was inflamed as well from straining. I’ve also never had a bunny that won’t swollow critical care! He just lets it dripple out his mouth or spots it out.

Please I can’t lose my other bun I’ve lost 5 family members this year. Two bunnies, my dog, my grandad, and my uncle. Advice?

Just went through this myself and Bam is having similar issues. Have they identified an underlying cause ? Dental, bacterial, injury ? Hydration is always a component as well as food. Will he eat aromatic herbs like cilantro, basil and parsley ? If so serve some nice and moist from washing and try to keep those up so atleast his gut is moving. Gentle tummy massage is also helpful.

They believe it was stress from his bond mate being I’ll and them fighting that started it. He’s started eating today but only greens…

And now he’s grunting as he tries to poo… Its extremely strange! Poor baby sounds like he’s in pain

Keep the moist greens coming and empty his litter tray regularly so you can monitor what is coming out, how much and how often. Do you have some infant gas drops ? Simethicone ? Sometimes it can help move things along and shouldn’t interfer with his medication.

I think you are doing all that should be done..Just a small attempt to help from my side. You can make a recipe so that he gets more fibre (it is likely that he wont eat hay himself) : Apple/Papaya/Carrot puree + oregano (or anything with tannin in them) + ground hay. (A BB member once suggested this to me).You can make a puree of any fruit that he is his favorite. I really hope the little one comes out of his pain of losing his loved one. *hugs Castiel*
Abdominal massages every 1/2 hour, wet veggies and herbs (its great that he has started to eat.), simethicone, some bunny safe NSAIDs and gut hypomotility drugs. What medicines are the vets giving him ?

I’m not happy contradicting people, but IMO, fruit is too high in sugar to be the best choice for a puré. Sugar could promote the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut. This is sth I only recently learned from a MOOC on the subject of gut microbiota in humans (University of Boulder, Colorado), but it is supported by what I’ve found on medirabbit etc now when my bunny Yohio had a bout of stasis (probably brought on by dental issues).

Finely ground hay and pellets mixed with f ex mashed pumpkin or plain water is imo a better choice. Avantika is very right in suggesting fibre, it’s vital for the bunny gut and will promote the growth of beneficial microbes. CC has a lot of fibre though.

It’s terrible when they’re ill. I’ve been syringe-feeding my Yohio every day for more than 3 weeks now, but now he seems better (I barely dare write it though). You can imagine the amount of CC my clothes, hair, towels and face have encountered during this time. And the number of I HATE YOU STUPID HUMAN!!! I’ve had to listen to.

I’m sorry ! .__. I wasnt aware that sugar from fruits could promote the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut. I use the fruit puree successfully, but then those weren’t very serious bouts of stasis. What Castiel is going through is really serious, so please omit the fruit part (sorry about that), and..I think a veggie that he is usually enticed to..you can make a puree of that in place of fruit.

*Update*

I’m not certain if today is a step forward or backwards ….

He is grinding his teeth in pain which he hadn’t been doing and hasn’t pooed since yesterday.

He is however eating (small amounts of) his pellets. And almost his normal amount of veggies. (Still no hay eating)

I put some kale (his favorite) in a blender with some critical care and pure pumpkin (also added some papaya enzyme and Lactobacillus, which I’ve had success treating minor stasis with before). He seems to like it more than critical care alone but still won’t willingly swollen.

He’s definitely feistier today. He won’t let me give him the subq fluids without squirming, which he was too sick to do at first.

I feel so guilty it got this bad. I was putting all my efforts into my bun with pneumonia that I didn’t even notice how sick he was getting.

Also, he isn’t happy about belly massages… He squeaks if I touch his belly. I think his muscles hurt real bad from straining
