I’d been looking at getting a bunny for months, and was taking my time building her cage, getting everything set up perfectly, etc. I wasn’t in a rush.
Then one day my friend calls me up to find out if I wanted the lionlop bunny she’d bought for her sons a couple months prior, because the boys just weren’t taking care of her and she didn’t have enough time to give her the proper amount of attention. I’d been around the bunny pretty much since day one, so I said sure.
Now I have the sweetest little punk-haired (and attitude’d) lionlop bun named Whisky. She’s an absolute sweetheart. About 6-7 months old. Not spayed yet (probably going to have to wait till spring unfortunately). There have been a few behavior issues, but not many. She chewed a couple cords one day (I had not sufficiently bunny-proofed around my desk and was busy getting ready to go out and should have put her back in her cage for a bit while I wasn’t able to pay attention, but luckily no permanent damage to her or the cords). She likes to hide under the dresser in my entryway, which I’m not crazy about. And she had a few “accidents” for the first three days I had her.
But on the plus side, she was 100% litterbox trained as far as peeing went by day 4, and is about 98% litterbox trained when it comes to poop (maybe once or twice a week I’ll find a single poop outside her cage, and she does poop a little bit in her cage outside the litterbox, but not much, just one here or there every so often). She loves to snuggle. She grooms me all the time (we’re working on the little nips she likes to throw in there, which sometimes are just a wee bit too hard). And she’s generally just a total sweetheart.
We have had a few issues with biting. The most notable being when I was shooing her off the back of the couch (she’s allowed on the couch, but not the back because she can reach cords from there) and she decided she didn’t like where I was standing and bit my thigh hard enough to give me a blood blister through my jeans. I let out a loud “eeek!” and she hasn’t bitten me since. For the most part she’s not a biter, though.
I’m super proud of her cage, though. Built it out of an old mahogany dresser that was missing a drawer. She’s got plenty of space and the door folds down to give her a ramp for going in and out. She loves it. And it’s open to give her free reign of the living room whenever I’m home and can keep an eye on her.
While I was typing all this she decided it was snuggle time again and she’s now grooming my shoulder…
