Hi guys! I got my first ever bunny earlier than expected, he/she is an adooorable brown lop! We got him from a family that doesn’t know it’s gender, they were giving him away due to allergies apparently. We were told he’s around 3-4 months. But I was wondering how you know when you can get them fixed and if there’s any good sites that help you determine the sex… I think it’s a male though, because he often makes these weird noises that might be honking.. It’s fairly quite though. I’m a little worried though but I think I’m just really nervous about doing something wrong.

Also, he’s in an x-pen and the little he has pooped I swept up and put it in the litterbox. Is this wrong for litterbox training?

When they are young, the difference between a boy and a girl is a hole versus a slit. Even vets and breeders can be wrong at times. It is so difficult. If you do a google search, I’m pretty sure there are pictures out there showing the difference. If your bun is a boy and he is 4 months, his other boy bits should be making an appearance. If you are able to flip him over, look for a couple of pink patches (about the size of your thumb) on either side. Note they will be forward, rather than behind like on a dog or a cat. Absence of family jewels does not guarantee a girl. But if they are there, then it there is no mistaking him for a her!

It might be helpful to take him to the vet to have him sexed too. You will want to make an appointment anyway for a wellness check and to discuss neutering (or spaying if it’s a girl).

For litter training, you are on the right track. Make sure there is nothing on the floor that could cause confusion to him. Keep picking up after any accidents and placing them in the litter box. Remember he may not be 100% consistent (or as consistent as he can be) until after he is neutered.

My Henry was about 5 months old when I discovered his boy bit’s! (I’m still horrified at the discovery – who knew boy bunny bits looked liked that????) Eeeew!
I was so shocked I did what all (stunned) bunny mum’s do and took a pic to send to my grown up kids titled “He’s def a BOY”! So I do have a pic, but am not ready to be banned from BB, so can’t post it for you, sorry – ha ha hah. But let me assure you, if he’s (?) old enough, you can’t miss it. Like LBJ said, it is more directed towards the belly as to between the back legs on a dog/cat.

Once you have your guy/girl desexed – it will make litterbox training that much easier.

PS – LBJ, my guy had ‘one’ not 2 either side?

I’m pretty sure one can ‘hang’ lower than the other?

Or maybe I saw one and didn’t ‘want’ to see anymore????? Ha ha ha hah! Anyhow – all GONE now! (thank goodness for that!) Ha ha ha ha…….

AndHenry, you could share that pic if you want to. It’s applicable to the topic. You won’t get banned for that… 🙂

Katie, congrats on the new addition! I’m glad you were able to take him in! Their care doesn’t change whether it’s a boy or girl, so just keep doing what you’re doing, and schedule a vet appointment for sexing, a full exam, and discussion of neutering (or spaying)!

Thanks everyone! I’ll try to judge myself but he’ll be going to the vet soon anyways and the vet will confirm I’m sure!

He’s only been here for a day now really but I couldn’t help but see if he’d come to my hand when I opened the x-pen’s door. He hopped right over and sniffed my hand before nudging it onto his head and he seems really happy to be pet. The next few times I put my hand in just adding hay to his rack, etc, he got up on his hind legs and started sniffing/nudging every time! There was a little nip when I stopped petting him once but other than that is this a good sign? I just know you’re supposed to leave them be in their cage for 48-72 hours beforehand but he doesn’t seem afraid at all..

I’ll try to get some pictures as soon as I can now that he seems pretty active with his toys and such! He’s so cute!

If he’s seeking attention already, you’re fine with giving him attention! Follow his lead! 🙂
