Okay, so I might be getting another rabbit soon. The rabbit I have now is an unfixed male – Lightning. And the rabbit I may be getting is an unfixed female – Gypsy. I would, of course,  keep them both separated. the male staying inside, where he is now. and the female staying outside, which is what she is used too as well.

I’ve watch my friends female rabbit before on multiple occasions, and whenever I was looking after her, my male would constantly be freaking out about how I smelled like a female rabbit, and seem to forget I even existed. I believe the longest I ever watched my friend’s rabbit was for about a week, and he didn’t calm down during that time.

So I guess my question is, Will my male ever calm down? And if he won’t do you have any suggestions? Or is it just a generally bad idea to get a female rabbit?

        Thanks in Advance!

It sounds territory-related so it’s likely that he will repeat this behaviour as long as he is not neutered. It doesn’t matter whether the other rabbit is male or female – as long as the scent of another rabbit is there, he will most probably freak out. The only way I can think of is to neuter him.

Female rabbits have a high chance of getting uterine cancer once they are older so people usually spay them anyway for their own wellbeing/health. Even if you spay the female and don’t neuter the male, he will still be able to smell her scent on you and thus freak out. So the best way is to neuter the male and spay the female if you are planning to have two rabbits.

They’re both older rabbits, the male is about five. I don’t know the female’s exact age but I know she’s also an older bun. And I’m very worried about the risk, I’ve heard of multiple buns dying while getting fixed, I’m not sure the exact ratio of rabbits dying vs living while having that procedure done. I’ve looked into it a bit before and the death rate seemed pretty high to me.

Why are you going to keep her outside?

In terms of spaying, yes it’s riskier as the bun gets older but an experienced vet shouldn’t have a high death rate, regardless. If she ends up with cancer, she’d need an emergency spay anyway.
