Eye Issues: Surgery and other options

Hi everyone – My bunny Hero has been having ongoing eye issues for a while now. 

Recently she was treated for snuffles and had a successful round of antibiotics which have stopped her sneezing discharge for the moment. At the moment her weepy eye has returned however. It has been going on and off for a few months now in total, and the vet has recommended putting her under anaesthetic for an x ray to find the underlying issue. 

In the past, this issue has receded and come back. Recently it stopped for about 4 days. We are wondering what the options are as we are very scared for her to go into the operating room and to be put under anaesthetic. So I would like to ask you some advice.

Has your bunny gone under surgery for these kinds of issues? If so, how was their recovery and their experience?

Have you dealt with long term weepy-eye issues in other ways and if so how?

For the record, Hero is a very healthy rabbit in every other respect; with a good balanced diet and 24/7 exercise areas (free roam).

She has a friend, Mr Rabbit, who lives with her. In the photo she is the white bunny at the back.

My bun has a permanent weepy eye due to his teeth being crooked, so after he eats he seldom has a big tear of milky white stuff. To keep him clean I just squeeze/wipe the tear off if I see it as it’s coming out or I use a drop of olive oil to detangle the fur in case the liquid dried before I could get to it.

As for x-ray, my vet doesn’t do a real anesthesia but a sedation (so the bun doesn’t sleep but it’s a bit stoned), we never had problems with that procedure

My bunny Yohio had to have his teeth burred, and he had to be under full anesthesia for that. It always went fine though. He didn’t have an eye issue, but he had small dental spurs and the vet couldn’t see them unless he was put under. Today’s anesthetic agents are considered safe for bunnies – GA always is a risk though, for all animals or humans.

I agree with Muchelle, for an x-rays, sedation might be a possibility.
