Casper is 11 weeks old and I’ve had him for about 3 weeks, he’s free roam in my bedroom and is bedded on Carefresh, good quality meadow hay and Burgess Excel Dandelion hay.

Casper has been sneezing a bit since I got him, but this is getting worse and worse. He had his jags nearly 2 weeks ago now. He must have sneezed (or snorted?) 10 times in the past 15 minutes. Last night he is sneezing, since yesterday, maybe 3-5 times in a row sometimes! It mainly happens in his cage but also happens on my bed!

My bunny used to do this about Once a week definitely not as bad and your bun. I would say take your bunny to the vet. If your bunny is only doing it 1 time every 1-2 days I would say they are fine but if your bunnys doing it that much definitely take your bunny to the vet.

Agreed, you should take him to the vet. Might be a cold, URI, or allergies.

Okay I will take him to the vet, I am working though, what are the chances of me getting an appointment tomorrow morning? Is this an emergency or would it be okay to book him in for Friday evening?

Is it okay to take him on the bus (30mins) or should I take a taxi (10mins)

I smoke in the house, just wondering if this could be a possible cause? Not in the same room as the rabbit, but still?

I don’t suppose anyone knows what I can expect to pay? I have about £100, hopefully it’s not more than that. He’s insured but God knows what it covers and what it doesn’t lol.

For price and chances of an appt. it all depends on the vet.

I honestly am not sure about if it is an emergency or not, I’d wait for others to weigh in. Also, check his wrists for wiped mucus.

The bus might be a stressful ride due to all the commotion but the time is fine. Take me 45 mins to get to get by car. So I guess it depends on how well he adapts and if he’s frightened by loud noises.

Your story sounds similar to Wick’s. Received Wick at about 9wo, after a week, took him to the vet for sneezing. It’d be every few minutes, multiple times including sneeze attacks which would be 7+ sneezes in a row.

Wick has been treated for a bacterial infection. Treatment started at 10wo, and literally only today (he’s now 6mo) is his first day medication free! The third medication regimen ended up drastically killing Wick’s infection. Because of the trial and error, as well as his particular infection, his treatment did persist longer than usual though; I hear a lot of people finish treatment in two weeks to three months. It depends on the infection type and how early you start treatment.

I’ll be blunt. It’s been expensive. On average, Wick went to the vet every other week and the visit would cost $90 to $200, based on whether it was a check up, re examination of body health, and medication refill. Wick is a runt, so he’s just a fragile being. I think insurance would help with medication?

Smoking in the house isn’t too much of an issue if it’s in a different room. Keep air circulating with Windows and fans.

                    100-200$ a week!

It’s free for a month insurance, came with his jags. It says it covers sickness up to £500 but then says including and only lists like 5 things… Hydrotherapy, prescription diet, etc. Doesn’t mention medication but it also doesn’t mention it as an exclusion.

Is the carefresh scented? Do you use it for his whole cage or just in litterbox?

Is there any discharge with his sneezing?

Are either of the hays particularly dusty?

ETA: If you can secure him safely (aybe wraooed in towel) tryy get a good look in his nostrils for anything stuck in there. Ive seen a few things online this week where sneezing was due to hay seeds stuck up the nose.  So it comes to mind.

Hi Thankyou I will try the blanket thing! His nose looks slightly damp but it might just be from his water bowl!

I wondered if it could be the Carefresh! There are no alternatives in store though other than wood shavings, unless maybe I try a reptile store?

I’m using Carefresh as a base for whole cage but I’m thinking about changing it for blankets except litter area. I put a blanket over the main part of his cage last night to cover the Carefresh and I think it helped. It’s Carefresh natural, but I had two bags and the second was poor quality, smelled dusty and damp and paler in colour than usual! Interestingly the first good bag came from Germany and the second from my home town, UK.

It has calmed down a lot this morning he has only sneezed twice, is eating, drinking and running about.

His sneezing is worse when on / near hay and has gotten worse since I got the Burgess Dandelion hay, so I might try the alfalfa King Timothy hay instead?

I tried wrapping him in a blanket it was a disaster, he did not want it!

The earliest appointment my vet can do is Wednesday morning, -.- that’s him booked in.
I cracked the window and his sneezing is definitely better today but he is still sneezing and/or snorting I’m not sure.
