Excess Cecotropes?

So I got my bunny just about two weeks ago.  She’s a 10.5 week old mini rex.  Her name is Judy Hopps, but we call her baby bun.  She’s super happy, super friendly.  I got her from a breeder.  Just yesterday, I started noticing quite a few cecotropes in her cage.  Since yesterday morning I’ve seen probably about 5 or 6.  She doesn’t seem sick, she binky’d for the first time today.  She’s very social, and a good eater.  When I got her, I also received food and hay from the breeder.  I’m not sure what kind as none of it is labeled.  She told me it was the only food and hay that the baby bun had ever been on.  I’m still giving her the pellets.  A handful or so a day.  And I just ran out of the hay and went and got Oxbow hay this morning.  I purchased a large bag of Timothy and a small bag of Alfalfa.  I plan on mixing the two.  Am I doing everything right?  Anything else I should try?  As I stated, she does not seem sick or unhappy.

Hey I’m not sure about the excessive amount of cecotropes – maybe something you should talk to the vet about, to make sure she is eating them? Are you sure they are cecotropes and not runny poos? That’s a key difference –

I would get some new pellets for her soon, and start mixing them both 50/50 before you run out of the breeders pellets. I would mix them for at least 7 days ish. This will help to make a smooth transition in her digestive system. I feed my rabbits unlimited pellets (they are holland lops). I have since they were babies, and they are 8/9 months now. They are not overweight, so don’t fear that! Its good to feed unlimited pellets when they are growing still. Maybe someone else has more info on this for mini rex rabbits?

– Feed a bit more timothy than alfalfa – especially since you don’t know if your pellets are alfalfa or timothy based right now. Oxbow hay is good! I get Oxbow hay for some variety, like their organic meadow hay and their orchard grass mix. I get my timothy hay from a farm near where I live (its way freaking cheaper), but I used to feed Oxbow timothy and it was great.

It sounds like you’re doing everything perfect! I’m glad she is binkying, it is the most adorable thing when they are young.

Thank you!! We just went and bought her the young rabbit oxbow formula. I was tempted to also purchase the adult bunny formula as well to mix, but decided against it.

Excessive cecotropes could be a sign that your bun is eating something excess in sugar OR is simply not eating them. Make sure your baby eats these or at least a few to ensure he’s getting also the nutrients, you may have to hand feed him if you don’t see him eating them. Buns will normally eat them when inside his litter or when grooming and you will know this sound when he reaches down towards his buisness and suddenly is chewing something that sounds gummy and wet
