I hope this question fits here, but wasn’t sure where else to post it. I have an essential oil diffuser, but haven’t been using it since we got Chewie & Snickers on purpose because I don’t want to irritate their respiratory system. Are there any essential oils that are safe to diffuse throughout the house that wouldn’t harm them?

        Thanks in advance.

Generally, no. Many essential oils contain toxic compounds such a phenols, ketones, and others. I would hope that everyone would know not to use essential oils directly on their bunny. But I think what a lot of people don’t know is that a diffuser can also cause harm over time. A bunny isn’t going to just fall over dead if their owner uses a diffuser once. However, the toxic compounds will actually accumulate in the body over time through repeated exposures. This is why we tell people to use extreme caution when it comes to essential oil diffusers.

Some oils are less harmful. These would be things like rose or lavender. Personally though, I wouldn’t risk it with my boys. And, if I did, I wouldn’t have the diffuser in their room. It would be more like a living room thing. But they have their own bedroom and I know some people have small apartments, etc.

Thanks for the quick response! I’ll probably be giving the diffuser away. Our apartment is 1200 sq ft., and they’ll have their own room, but rather safe than sorry!

Yeah, I think that has generally been the consensus when this topic comes up. Even with the supposedly less harmful ones, there doesn’t seem to be enough information or research out there for anyone to really know for sure.

I found this old thread from January. Azerane (another leader) said that lavender can be harmful to cats. I suppose this would be an example of there not being enough research or information about the supposedly less harmful essentials oils for anyone to know for sure whether or not they are harmful to rabbits. So, yeah, probably not worth risking.

Thanks! I’ll do some reading. I love my little guys so much though. I’d never risk their health.

No problem! If you do a google search, there are several websites that pop up on the subject. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of conflicting information between them.
