        Hi everyone,
Joey has recently had a respiratory infection and was prescribed enroflaxin antibiotics to treat it. He’s recovered, but I was wondering about the shelf life of the antibiotic. How long can I keep it for until it turns bad? I don’t want to toss it right away as it may be useful to have on hand in case the infection resurfaces, but obviously I wouldn’t want to poison him. Would refrigerating help?

Is it compounded (i.e. the vet crushed up a pill and suspended it in liquid flavoring)?

It looks like it, it says “(in HCl)” on the side, and the medicine is strawberry flavored

Some of those flavorings need to be refrigerated, I know the stuff my vet uses does. I think 30 days is about how long the Baytril itself is good for, but I would certainly ask your vet first before giving him more.

I took this information directly from the pamphlet that came with Ellie’s (unflavoured) oral baytril. “Shelf-life after first opening the immediate packaging: 3 months. This medicinal product does not require any special storage conditions.”. I would call the vet clinic just to double check because I’m not certain about whether or not the flavouring would affect the shelf life.

I read on a bird forum that a vet had said – a year past the expiration date…

I imagine the flavoring would affect the shelf life.

Alright sounds good. I’ll give the vet a call, thanks for your help!
