My rabbit won’t eat! He ate some hay this afternoon (somewhere around 4 or 5 hours ago?) and was excited for veggies when I brought them in, though unfortunately, I didn’t end up seeing if he ate any of the veggies or not (he has a partner who could have eaten all of them). I never leave the room while they’re eating veggies, just to make sure that they are both eating. But this time I did and of course, this is the time when something goes wrong!

I did manage to get him to eat a couple of pellets and a few bites of hay, but only barely.

So, of course, I immediately tried to find a vet that would take him. But all of the exotic vets are closed (it is past 11:00 pm here) and the only emergency vet nearby said that they don’t have a doctor in that will see rabbits! I’m still searching to see if I can find anyone around that will see him, but I also wanted to try posting here for some advice.

Does anybody know how I should handle this? These are my first rabbits and I’ve only had them for a little over a month, so I’m incredibly inexperienced. I’ve done lots of research, of course, but everything I’ve seen says to take them to the vet immediately. will he be okay until morning, or do I need to find someone to take him to tonight, even if that means subjecting him and his partner to an hour (or more) in the car? Is there anything I can do at home that will help him for now?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You can give baby gas drops (simethicon) right away. It can be found in the baby section of f ex Walmart or Tesco or in any pharmacy. Sometimes (often) this helps a lot. I assume its difficult to see if he has made any poops since you have two rabbits, but do you see any really small poop? Poops strung together by hair (“Beads on a string”-poop)? How old are the rabbits (Meaning are they very young or are they over 5-6 months?) If he’s not very young and if he’s still willing to take treats, I think I’d wait until tomorrow rather than haul him off on a long car-ride. But it does depend on his general demeanor etc.

This is a very good article on GI stasis in buns (don’t freak out, this could very well just be a bit of gas, home treatment protocol would still be the same):

I deleted your other thread on the same subject so we can keep all answers in the same thread.
