Emergency! My vet overdosed my bun on enrofloxacin

My bun is suffering from uti for quite a long time but we were not able to catch it in time. So now it has become chronic. We took her to the vet who gave her enrofloxacin injections. The problem is he has over dosed her. She was only supposed to get around 30 mg per day at the most but was given 50mg for the past 2 days. Now I don’t know if there are side effects of over dosing on this drug and if I should continue to give it at the normal dose today. The last two days she’s completely lost her appetite and I’ve been hand feeding her and force feeding oxbow critical care. I don’t want to go back to the vet now cause I’ve no trust in him. Someone please advice. There are no other vets available who even treat rabbits. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Enroflaxin is an antibiotic, whilst an overdose may upset tummies it generally isn’t lethal. With antibiotics the dosage often varies based on the nature of the infection and whether it is aggressive or general. I have a bun with a localised form of pasteurella behind the eyes causing swelling and cloudiness, Lucy is on very high doses of antibiotic, possibly 3 times what a bun would usually be given and it is a long term treatment. I am balancing it with a probiotic and digestive supplement. Lucy is on 1.4 ml of enrotril daily plus a topical oitment for her eyes. I would look to a probiotic supplement for the duration of her treatment and query the dosage with your vet. It does not seem that high in comparison.

As Roberta says, antibiotics are dosed differently depending on the type of infection, so your bunny will most likely be able to cope with this higher dose. It’s not like over-dosing a pain-killer etc. A probiotic, preferably one containing saccaromyces cerevisiae (live brewer’s yeast) and/or enterococcus faecium can help keep the gut in good order -antibiotics kill off lots of good gut bacteria.
It’s great that you have Critical Care, it contains everything a bunny needs.

I assume giving antibiotics to rabbits is similar to giving one to humans. Once I got pretty sick and the doctor gave me a really high dose of antibiotics to kill the infections quickly. I mean those pills were freaking HUGE and I can tell you it was a very unhappy week for me as I had trouble using the restroom and I lost my appetite (I would throw up every time I ate). I had a real crappy time using the bathroom literally. I’ve read in numerous places if anybody or any animal is taking strong doses of antibiotics to fight an infection, then they should also be taking probiotics because the antibiotics kill both harmful and non-harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. I don’t think you can exactly overdose on antibiotics unless you give so much it literally kills all the good cells……

I know that at the store on this binkybunny website, they have stuff in the treats section (if i remember correctly) where they sell probiotic or digestive tract well being stuff. If you are getting increasingly worried, you could take a look at that and see if you would like to buy it. But it’s good that you are feeding your bunny critical care.

The most common side-effect of enrofloxacine is loss of appetite. A bun needs to eat though, so you must keep syringe-feeding. You can mix CC with sth tummy like baby fruit purée or plain canned pumpkin to make it more enticing. You can also try fragrant herbs like cilantro or parsley dipped in water and see if she’ll eat that.
