Ellie got chocolate toxicity?!

While I was out for less than an hour, Ellie managed to wedge her way through the modified baby gate and get through to a box of chocolate macaroons . I came home to the place scattered in half eaten chocolates and chewed up chunks everywhere. Immediately I went running to find Ellie flopped, little heart was racing, and she didn’t recognize me when I went to scoop her up. There was pee everywhere which is extremely unlike her. I called the vet and brought her in. 

The vet had never heard of a rabbit managing to eat excess amounts of chocolate but she made a few quick calls and came back to the room. I took Ellie’s heart rate while I was in the clinic and it was just under 200. My vet said that there were a lot of clinical studies involving lethal doses of chocolate but not many about the survival rates/treatments of chocolate toxicity. Soon, Ellie was given fluids and activated charcoal. I was sent home with more charcoal, the vet’s personal contact information in case anything happened over night and valium in case of a seizure.

Nothing happened overnight and Ellie is doing okay now, but jeez, what a scare!! Needless to say my roommates will be more careful about what they leave laying around… I gave Ellie a second dose of activated charcoal the morning after the chocolate fiasco. She’s still been kind of…idk…”off” personality wise since then (3 days ago) but she’s eating, drinking, and pooping normally now.

Has anyone else ever had a bun gorge on chocolate and lived to tell the tale?

Glad your buns ok. I recently had a baby gate that I bought put to the test and I thought that 2 inches was too small for bandit to get through however as seen here (click signature and find this video 20170413_205232) he easily shifted his hips and got through and I was super annoyed. I solved the problem with some gauge wire and zip ties from my local garden store (ironically the bunny proof garden fencing)

No, but what a scare! I’m glad Ellie’s ok now…
I imagine she’s still a bit off because (a) it must have been rough on her body, and (b) it must’ve been terribly frightening for her (except for the actual hoovering of the macaroons – I imagine that was a cheeky bun’s idea of perfect fun
Keep her on a really “clean” diet (ie, no treats) for a while to give her system time to flush out all residual toxins. And reassure her with lots of attention to help her recovet emotionally.

Sorry for such a late reply!! The vet did a FaceTime call with me and we discussed what to do for the next bit further. She’s back to 100% now and my boyfriend is currently in the process of building a new baby gate that’s bunny proof lol. Until he’s done she has a big X pen to play in!
