A few weeks ago I overheard an undergraduate student (who works at the vet school cafe) talking about her new bunny. Of course I swooped in, demanding to see and share pictures. We got to talking about rabbits, and I went into full-on bunny slave mode (to make all of you BBers proud!). I asked her about the bunny’s diet, living arrangements, age, etc. The rabbit lives indoors, but in a small cage (boo!); she feeds hay and pellets, but read online somewhere that bunnies can’t have greens because it upsets their GI system (eek!), and finally that her bunny was becoming a hormonal little lady. So what did I do?
I referred her to BB (wrote down the website and all!), talked to her about xpens (told her to go on amazon), and gave her the name of the exotics vet at the veterinary teaching hospital to schedule her pre-spay appointment. We also talked about proper diet, that greens ARE good for bunnies, but to introduce them slowly, and the amount of exercise all bunnies need per day.
Guess what?! Her bunny is getting spayed tomorrow, she has an xpen picked out on amazon, and all is well!!!! I also offered to help her out with food, hay and toys, since I get half-off of everything from Oxbow because they market to the veterinary school.
I am so proud of her; she was so willing to learn!
It’s amazing when you can teach someone about better care for their pet; I suppose that’s why I’m going to school to be a veterinarian. I am overjoyed that I was able to do that for someone. It’s such a great feeling.
Finally, thanks to YOU ALL for teaching ME so much about rabbits. I have learned so much through this website and forum, and now count myself among the educated bunny slaves. I can’t wait to pass on what I’ve learned, and to learn even more, once I’ve become a vet.
BB LOVE!!!!
