  So I just bought my little baby on Saturday from the humane society but just today she decided to eat Timothy hay from her potty tray I’m worried she’ll get sick from this why does she do this and is it sanitary for her to do? She’s my first rabbit sorry for the question.

  Bunnies like to poop and eat at the same time so a lot of people (myself included) specifically put hay in their litter boxes for them to eat. It’s perfectly fine so long as you change the litter boxes regularly – I empty and clean my bunny’s trays daily.

  Most buns actually enjoy nibbling on hay when they go potty. It’s of course not good if the bun eats hay that’s been peed and pooped on, so many bun owners place a hay rack within reach from the potty tray. It’s good if a bun eats as much hay as possible, so any way hay eating can be encouraged is good.

  I customarily put my buns’ hay in their litterbox, as well as in a hay rack. Panda and Fernando tend to prefer the hay they can most easily get at, though, so they use the hay rack mostly when they can’t easily find good morsels in the main hay pile.

  My Bam moostly uses one corner of his boxes, so he can have a pile of hay in the opposite corner. Some buns like to lounge in their litter box. They are weird little creatures =)

  I wish mine were that considerate. They stomp and drag the hay all over the box even though I put it on just one side
