Easy Way to Give Bunny It’s Medicine

OK, the Vett says you have to give your bunn 1 1/2 ml of XXX every day.  What to do!  To syringe feed a bunny medicine, you have to grab them, hold them, place the syringe in between their incisors and molars.  This is a BIG problem, because bunnies don’t like to be caught,  picked up, and force fed medicine..

….How to do it easily!

First of all, before you even have to give you bunny medicine, start out by giving them, every morning a banana slice.   A piece of banana about an inch thick.  They love bananas.

Now…lets say you have to give bunny medicine…lets say 1 1/2 ml…standard dose of most medicines.  Cut a conical depression in the banana slice with a knife, and then add in the 1 1/2 ml of medicine into the depression and then give the rabbit the banana slice. They will eat it!  We had to give our bunny. Bunny,  Metacam, it has a sweet taste, and we would put it in the banana slice.  At first she would start chewing on he banana slice and also drinking the medicine.  Not much later, when we gave her the banana slice, she would drink the Metacam first and then finish up the banana slice. We did this for several years, until Bunny passed away last September at 11 1/2 years of age.

About banana treats.  Bunnies do not like ripe bananas. The perfect banana for a a bunny will have a skin that is yellow and green.  Bunnies like bananas that have a little tart taste to the sweet. 

Tricking them eating a banana slice to get their medicine is so easy.  All of the three rabbits I’ve owned just love bananas.  On weekends, when me and my wife try to sleep in, at dawn, both flemmish babies will start scratching on the bedroom door for us to wake up and give them their banana slices. They don’t need medicine now, but when they do, they are already prepared! 

My advice…Get your bunny hooked on banana slices.  Then when they need medicine, cut a depression in the slice, fill it with medicine and feed it to them!!  It’s sooo easy.

That is a good tip, to have banana as an extra special super yummy in store for when they might need meds, craisins and apple etc is not as practical for applying meds on =)

I didn’t know that about yellow green bananas, but it makes sense.

I wish I thought of this before. My bun just finished her medicine prescribed by the vet, so I don’t have to worry now, but it’s good advice for the future if I need to syringe feed her again. She would just bite at the syringe, even if I had a good hold on her. She’d turn her head when I thought I had it in the right spot. Lol! Goes crazy for bananas though, you’re so right!
