Early GI Stasis

Hi all. I’m new around here but have been reading posts on the forums for awhile. My bunnies name is Clover and as of Tuesday she stopped drinking water and almost entirely stopped eating pellets and hay. I took her to the vet and they diagnosed her with early GI Stasis. They gave her some sort of laxative shot, a shot for pain, and some IV fluids with water to keep her hydrated, they sent me home with cisapride, netroclopamide, and critical care all to be given with syringe. She has started drinking water, but only if I put a tiny amount of pineapple juice in it. She has pooped since I got her home from the vet Wednesday. But it doesn’t appear as if she has pooped maybe since late yesterday? It’s hard to tell because she’s been hanging out in her litter box a lot and the poop is getting mixed in to the litter. I’m going to get her new litter today but I’m a little concerned about her not pooping much yet. She is peeing and is taking all medication an critical care like a champ

Hi! It’s great that she is still drinking and eating all of her critical care. Is she touching her hay at all? Buns usually don’t poop their normal amount right after a stasis event. I wouldn’t be too worried as long as there are some poops, but I agree its definitely something you want to continue keeping an eye on. After you get more litter, try to clean it as much as possible to help you keep track of her poops.

Hi Luna, thanks for the reply. I saw a marked improvement in clover after posting this (that’s why I never logged back in) and all was well until recently. I noticed last week that every so often her poop would look slightly abnormal but that was about it. Today though, at around 12 somehow she got into where I keep her pellets and helped herself and stopped pooping afterwards for about 3 hours and had a hardened belly, she finally started pooping a bit but they were smaller than normal. I spoke with her vet and they really offered no real advice and since it was a Friday I couldn’t take her in. Also it’s soooo expensive :/ she has eaten relatively normally up until a few hours ago and now all she’ll eat is parsley. She hasn’t pooped in a few hours. I went and got simethicone to give her and just recently gave her a second dose along with some pedialyte. I’m concerned that obviously the amount of pellets she ate may have caused a bit of a blockage and the symptoms yet again are similar to GI Stasis. I’m really so concerned and I just don’t know what to do.. she’s been hanging out in her litter box trying to poop unsuccessfully for awhile. Does anyone have advice?

Hopefully your bun is doing better. Alfie had some blockage when I first got him (it was a massive hairball). I made sure he was given lots of fluids, even if I had to put some apple juice in the water to make it appetitizing for him to drink. My vet told me that if there is an actual blockage, you want to take away the food and focus on fluids and get them to a vet asap. My vet did sub-q fluids to get the gut hydrated and easier for the blockage to push through. They also put Alfie on pain meds as well to prevent his gut from slowing down due to the amount of pain he was in. I can’t remember what else they did as I was such a worrywart at the time! Hopefully your bun is doing better now. Keep us posted!

My bun had some issues similar to that. He wouldn’t eat anything and was just laying in the corner of his cage no matter what I did or whatever treats I offered. I went online and looked up stuff, and I got him some applesauce with banana and strawberry in it. (Vet was closed and I wanted to try something before going to emergency vet) You would’ve thought he was on top of the world with it. Ate it up. Helped spark some life back in him. He got some hydration and I bet the sugars boosted his energy a little (don’t worry it was only 2 tbl sp worth). By that night he was hopping around again. The next day, you couldn’t tell he’d been sick. I’m going to keep the stuff around in case it happens again.
