EAR MITES!

Hey Guys, my newly adopted rabbit has ear mites. He was treated for them at the shelter with revolution but they must have come back as I noticed scabs on his ear the day we brought him home :/. I gave him another dose of revolution last night as advised by the vet at the shelter but the scabs haven’t gotten any smaller yet.

I vacuumed his room and cleaned his entire cage and litter box with a really diluted bleach mixture, changed his fleece bedding and threw out all of his toys in the hopes of getting rid of any mites that might be creeping around. I also threw out his old bag of hay and got a new bag in case they are creeping in there.

I’ve googled that applying mineral oil or olive oil on the bunnies ear scabs can help treat the mites. Has anyone ever tried this as a supplementary treatment on top of the revolution? People claim it is safe an effective, any experience with that?

Is there anything else I can do in terms of cleaning the house? Some special kind of cleaning product to kill the mites, etc?

Mineral oil is no good. Just gets messy. It’s alow-budget treatment that is not effective. Revolution is the best thing, it has systemic action, but the scabs will not go away over night, even if the parasites die, the scabs will need to heal by the normal route of wound-healing.

As for cleaning, I think all you need to do is clean thoroughly. Pesticides are generally very poisonous to the rabbit as well as to the pests. Revolution has rather a long duration of action and during that time the bunny is protected from getting re-infested. After 15-30 days you may need to repeat the treatment if the infestation is massive, maybe that what was wrong with the first round of treatment, it didn’t kill off all the eggs.
