E coniculi treatment going badly

Recently i posted about my rabbit having ‘episodes’ – when taken to the vet, she really had no idea but blood tests were done

First day he was given Baytrel (sp?), without any results of the blood test first but just to make sure i was told to give it to him 2x daily., 4 days in, the medication i was given went bad. in that time he barely ate, but immediately regained his appetite once the medication was stopped

When blood tests came back he have a positive/high titer(?), i was told that i could either wait and see what might happen, (as he has had 0 episodes in the last 2 weeks), or start treatment, so i started treatment thinking that be the way to go

Today is day 5 of treatment, and has again slowed down on eating. His droppings are smaller (though not tiny, yet), and his food bowl looks only barely touched. I asked specifically about whether this medication caused  decrease in appetite and i was told that it wouldn’t. He is also becoming increasingly aggressive when given the medication, biting and tossing the syringe, trying to bite hands and trying to shred the towel if you try to wrap him up. He kicks and throws a massive fuss.

At this point, i’m feeling like the stress and not eating are going to be more harmful than the possible e.coniculi . Thoughts? what should i do in this situation?

What medication is he being given? Fenbendazole?

No, pancure (sp?). She said 30 days + an extra 60 at a lower dose

Panacur is the brand name of fenbendazole. 28 consecutive days of panacur is the standard treatment. Then repeat treatment with 9 days of panacur every 6 months.

It’s really hard to say what you should do, it would be a judgement call. If he stops eating, that’s really bad. I think you should call your vet and ask for an opinion.

They can be very angry when you try to syringe them meds. But sometimes there’s just no other way. They tend to forgive you once it’s all over.

I’d question giving it for the further 60 days. It won’t do much then. 

Is the panacur the white liquid? There is a paste form available, depending on where you live. There is also Lapizole, which is flavoured.

If he is really sensitive to the fenbendazole, you could try something like toltrazuril. Ponazuril is better but possibly pricey. It’s a horse paste (Marquis) that would have to have dosage worked out for a rabbit. 

When on dewormer, rabbits can be a bit off initially and they have more toxins to process due to the parasites dying off.
