Whoops! Since so many of us have accidentally doomed our buns to ridicule by giving guessing on the sex, I thought maybe we should have a Gender Switch forum! Share your stories about when you first found out that there was something a bit off about your bunny.
After Huckles started to build a nest and tear her fur out, I began to suspect we were dead wrong about her gender but there was no way in heck that I was going to try to go for that snarling little fur ball’s “special areas” to be sure. She scared me!!!! I mean, who knew a rabbit could growl?!!! I didnt. I called the vet and had the following conversation:
Vet: What breed is the rabbit?
Me: I dont know
Vet: What sex is the rabbit?
Me: Uh… I dont know
Vet: Do you know what color it is?
Me: I KNOW THAT ONE!!!! Its black!
I dropped her off…. the next day I went to pick her up. The vet handed her back and said “By the way, you have a girl.” I laughed.
I guess “Huckleberry” could be a girls name?
Amazingly, I got the two boys I was expecting. Velvateen was even from a pet store! They were both younger than 8 weeks when I got them as well.
yup! rue’s never been very cooperate when it comes to getting a look, so the breeder told me, “well, i’m pretty sure it’s a girl, but i could be wrong.” the brief glimpse i managed to get when we got the bun home looked female to me, as well. wasn’t until i was attempting to brush “her” belly and found a pair of jellybeans that i realized i actually had a boy! i still call him “her” about half the time. i’m sure he doesn’t mind. lol
So far, no gender changes here ![]()
No gender mix ups here. When I first got Marshmallow though the vet went back and forth on whether she was a boy or a girl for awhile.
The people who gave me Gabby said she was a girl. I was scared to manhandle her to find out for myself. When she went to get fixed she was indeed the girl they said she was.
I’ve had two mix-ups. I thought my Chinese bunny, Xiao Pang, was a boy until she built a nest in my bed. Then, when I got Calypso, he was my “little princess” until he got frisky with my teddy bear and the truth about his gender became VERY obvious. lol. I finally got it right with Echo, but my batting average is terrible. lol
Both of my boys were boys. It was extremely obvious down there though, so there was no guessing.
I didn’t know for a while when I got Bindi. He didn’t want to be handled and was so furry it was impossible to check for a couple of weeks. That’s why I named him something I liked for a boy or girl. It’s a bit girly but he’s never complained! ![]()
Ps. Thank you very much….Now I’m gonna have that song stuck in my head all day! ![]()
Never had that issue. Max was already neutered by his rescue. Meadow came from a rescue at about 4 months, so she had been checked and double-checked.
I really wanted a baby boy because I hoped he would have less teenage issues than a girl. I picked him up from the breeder and had the *perfect* name picked out (Otto!), but I was worried he might actually be a girl. I took him to the vet the next day and asked her to check and make sure he was a boy. She said “Definitely a boy” and I asked how she knew. She flipped him over and showed me his testicles. Haha. Oh! I guess that’s how you know! He was only 8 weeks at the time too.
Hannah was already spayed and 3 years old when I got her, so no surprises there.

HAHAHA Ah, sorry LPT, it could have been worse….
Pringles was my first bunny, got him as a boy
Daisy was my second, was certified a girl so I thought I had my ‘couple’
After a couple of sex ‘changes’, Pringles went in for his neuter and was declared officially to be a girl.
I was lucky enough to take Daisy to a bunny-savvy vet the first time and found out she was a he.
So I did wind up with my boy, girl couple in the end 😉
We brought Hodari home not knowing her sex, and just opted for a gender neutral name. We had her for over a month before we found out, although I suspected she was a girl and usually said “she” and “her” when referring to her. When we took her in to be spayed/neutered the vet confirmed we had a girl. My husband sometimes still forgets she’s a girl, though…
Huckles, this topic name is hilarous ![]()
Hodari is very beautiful! I demand more pictures please ![]()
The person that I got Chacha from gave the right gender. Chacha was 7 weeks old when I got her
She has been my little girl since.
kralspace…. I LOVE that name, Pringles!!!! I’d be chanting “once you pop you just can’t stop” after every binky!!!
warri went from boy to girl to boy!
Hi, I’m new here!
I have never had this issue as I have had bunnies all my life and my mom had bunnies as a child as well. So I have gotten very good at sexing them! I can actually sex 3-4 week old bunnies now, I find it funny when pet stores say the 9 week old bunnies are “too young to sex”
Chloe, there may be some truth to that
Sometimes, it is hard for others to gender some rabbits.
We got Momo from a gal who breeds and shows English Spots. She was already 3 months when we got her and the girl had just the two female “charlies” left that she was letting go. Plus I double checked her sex when we got her home and determined girl. For whatever reason I have a talent at sexing things. *shrug*
*The More You Know* Charlies is the nickname given to English Spots that have imperfect marking, due to their “Charlie Chaplain mustache”
I guess I have to deal with Steven Tyler’s voice in my head for some time… ![]()
Charcoal was a “boy” when I got her. I haven’t checked lately though… ![]()
Huckleberry is fine name for a girl… treat it like Halle Berry. ![]()
Yep, dear Daphne was sexed by a vet as a girl, but then a little after she turned 3 months, I picked her up only to see two little jelly beans down there. Whoops. Now, I still call her/him Daphne and switch between “he” and “she” every other sentence. It’s hopeless, but I figure she/he doesn’t mind as long as there’s a phonebook to chew and lots of room to sprint around in
Plus, I figure once I get Daphne neutered, it really won’t matter, haha
LOL Charcoal’s Mom, Huckleberry would ssay “I am as beautiful as Halle Berry… if not more so, but I am better in every way ’cause I is a bunneh!!! Therefore, bow down, but first… shower me with raisins!” She is spoiled. I think the name works ok, we usually call her “The Hucklebun”
These are awesome. I feel more and more like an idiot though for it not being obvious to me hahahaha
aw, don’t feel like that, my first vet (a dear sweet man, but better versed in farm animals and had never been asked to neuter a rabbit…lol) groped Pringles on several occasions to see if ‘he’ was ready and finally asked me if I knew where rabbits kept ‘them’!
