My 7-year old bunny has recently started drinking way more water, and consequently peeing a lot more, than she usually does. I noticed her water bottle was being emptied quite fast around 2 weeks ago but attributed that to thirst caused by heat. Last week when changing her litter box, I noticed that the contents contained so much urine that it looked flooded, even with all her poops and the litter bedding. I’ve been watching her these past couple of days, but she’s still drinking and peeing a lot more than usual. Everything else has been normal: no changes in diet, environment, or her behavior. I’m very concerned, especially since the increase in water intake and urination was so sudden and large. The vet won’t be open for another day, and I don’t know what to do. Please advise.

You should call the vet when they open on Monday and make an appointment. Drinking and peeing a lot more than normal is a sign that something isnt right, but exactly what it’s all about, you need a good vet to determine. It is important that you find out what’s wrong so she can start treatment as soon as possible.

          Is your rabbit spayed?

Yeah, that’s what I was planning on doing. Is there anything else I can do in the mean time? I feel like I’ve already left this going for too long.

              And yes, she is spayed

              Thank you for the response!

I dont think thete’s anything you can do at home until you’ve seen a vet, unless she stops eating or pooping or shows other signs of acute illness.

(I asked if she was spayed because pyometra and other disorders of the reproductive tract can manifest as drinking and peeing excessively- but since she’s spayed, that can of course be ruled out 👍)

Ok, I’ll just keep an eye on her until then. Thank you so much for your help!

My 8 year old cat was having the same problems a few months ago. After I took him to the vet, I found out that he had diabetes. So for the past few months I’ve been giving him insulin doses twice a day, which has brought him back to his normal self.

I don’t know if that’s what your bunny has, but I think that it’s worth mentioning the possibility to your vet when you see them.

                    Wishing you the very best!!

I was also worried she might’ve had diabetes, but she’s not overweight and it seems diabetes in rabbits is quite rare. I sincerely hope she’s just bored or something and doesn’t have any kidney or other problems. Thank you!

It could also be a dental issue. Sometimes when a bun’s mouth hurts they drink more to sooth it (and then pee more as a result).
