Dried fruit?

The lady I got my Gibson from said she fed her show bunnies dried fruit and veggies a little at a time throught the week and then once a week they got fresh. They also of course ate pellets daily and a mix of rolled oats and sunflower seeds which was every few days.

Anyone else feed their bunnies dried fruits and veggies? I’d like to get them for Gibson.

Oh definitely. Buns love the veggies are regular meals, and fruits as treats. Check out the link under Bunny Info up at the top of the page for diet, there should be some good info there about buns can and cannot eat if i remember right.

I would only feed fresh greens. You can give dried fruit as a treat but it is high in sugar so only a small amount as a treat.

As for pellets you should not feed pellets with all the extra added stuff – rabbits love it but it’s not really the best for them. You just want a high quality, high fiber timothy pellet. Oats are a carbohydrate and that is not good for a rabbit, it can cause over production of their cecals.

i would stick to veggies hay and a quality pellet each day. maybe some fresh fruit as a treat. i tend to think a dried fruit is TOO sugary for a bun to handle and might give them an upset tummy. each day buttons gets 4 cups of veggies(lasts him until about 3 pm) with an occasional apple or banana slice. he gets unlimited hay and 2 tablespoons of pellets. stick fibrous fruits such as apple because these are a bit healthier. as for the “gourmet” foods, these are too high in starch and can cause various health problems.

The only dried fruit I ever use as a treat, sparingly, are raisins or craisins. They are smaller than other fruit pieces, so one sweet treat will make a bunny happy without packing on the pounds.

Just be careful with having raisins around if you have a dog ….. if you happen to drop a raisin on the floor … or if bunny does not eat a raisin …
do not allow any dogs to eat raisins …. as raisins can be fatal to dogs. Some dogs do ok … and some dogs have kidney failure due to eating raisins.
It is not understood why raisins can be fatal to some dogs … and not to other dogs.

Since we are speaking of dried items here …. I thought I would mention ….last summer, at the end of my garden season, I pulled up my sweet banana pepper plants and hot pepper plants. I pulled off the leaves and I dried the leaves … I just allowed them to air dry. I then put them in containers and fed the dried pepper leaves to my buns all winter long … this was one of their favorite things to eat.

To dry the leaves … look for something to put the leaves in where they can sit loosely and air out. I happen to have an empty bird cage … which worked perfect. The wire held the leaves in and allowed air to flow thru and dry out.

So, if you do not have a garden, but you know someone who does …. tell them you want their plants at the end of the season (before frost hits the plant) Also, the buns loves the leaves NOW when they are green and fresh. Make sure the grower does not spray any chemicals on their plants (or seven dust). My buns love the fresh banana peppers too this time of year. I may try drying some of the banana peppers for them for them to have later.

Can rabbits eat dried fruit from the store that people may normally eat?
