Hey guys I was wondering if you could offer up some ideas to me and my family.

We have 3 dogs, a pomeranian (male), a rat terrier (female), and we now have my grandfathers hound mix (male).

For the love of all things holy and that smell nice…..our 2 dogs will not stop pooping downstairs and the pom constantly pee’s downstairs. The backdoor to the yard is always open for them to come and go.

We have tried blocking them completely from going downstairs and they always manage to push the xpen or the ratty jumps from the stairs over it.

They love going down stairs to sleep with either my brother or me after my mom leaves to work. My dad is away for work.

They always poop in the same spot, and the pom loves to go into my brothers room and pee on his throw rugs. The ratty is the one who poops the most downstairs.

I know there is stress from having the 3rd dog. The pom WILL NOT STOP BARKING!!! It’s HORRIBLE. yap yap yap yap yap. It was never like this before. Then if the parrot starts screaming, the pom and the ratty yap yap yap howllllllllllllllllll. It’s SO embarassing you can hear it halfway down the hill. If I come home late – say 2am ….the pom goes crazy yap yap yap yap yap yap, he never did that before either. I feel horrible because I know he wakes me mom up and he never did that before either. Normally he would just see me and be cool, but then he starts yapping, and then the big dog starts barking and …..wow it’s just really bad. So now if I do come home late I have to park up the street so they don’t hear my car. Stupid right?

Blocking them off seems to be the only reasonable way to get them to stop pooping and peeing downstairs but a babygate won’t work because the rat jumps over it, and if its something permanent like that, it makes it hard for us humans to use it. Plus with hardwood floors and high heels trying to balance over it just isn’t that great. We’ve tried it. The xpen ….easily pushable even with things in front of it there is always some way that they get by it. UGHHJH!!!

What do I do I am so sick of  picking up dog turds all day!!!!!! The barking is also insane here. We have squirt bottles over the house but the Pom loves water so you can imagine how well it’s working.

*cries* the barking is SO stressful and the poop/pee is so nasty to be living in. I couldn’t imagine this on carpet, thank god we have hardwood floors.

        HELP ME!!!!! IM GOING CRAZY

Honestly, I would get in contact with an animal behaviorist. I know at the humane society here they have classes and such on things like this, dogs pooping and peeing due to behavior. Maybe check and see if there is something like that in your area?

Yes it’s something my mom has mentioned.

              1. Are they fixed? If not it could be something territorial. Also make sure that you clean with something that is going to break up the enzymes and urates. Dogs will go in an area that has been used before. If your carpet smells like a “doggie toilet spot” to them, they are going to use it. Try vinegar and water or Natures Miracle. It might not be a bad idea to revisit some house breaking 101 to be sure they get the message.

As for the barking… a yappy pom is not a surprise to me. It is kinda their thing. Find something that will interrupt the barking, then reward the dog for a few seconds of quiet. Treats and lots of affection. To stop the barking you can use a vocal correction or startle with a noise like coins in a can or something like that. It sounds obnoxious at first, but it can help.

Receipe for success-if you don’t follow this, and decide to pick and choose you will not have success

                1) They must be fixed AND see a vet to ensure there is nothing physically wrong with them
                2) Don’t skip number 1-you would hate to be frustrated with a dog who is sick.

                3) They must be in crates when not supervised (this is temporary and you must do it. You can substitute crate for bathroom or small locked room, but they absolutely must be in a small place when not directly supervised)
                4) You must rent professional cleaning equipment and clean the basement. Dogs smell 10-100,000 x us, and believe me-any toilet smell is like a restroom sign. It MUST be professionally cleaned so there is no trace. IF that has been going on for a while, consider pullking up carpet and reflooring. Underlay will have all kinds of stuff in it and under it.
                5) When not in crates they are directy supervised. You physcially take them outside every hour-they are not making correct decisions about when they need to go outside, so you make the decision for them now.
                6) Keep them out of the basement for at least a week-you need to break that habit

Remember-they are not doing this to be evil-if you could speak to them, they would tell you that the basement is a bathroom. It’s your job now to break the habit with close supervision (so they don’t make a mistake) taking them outside often (So they go correctly) and give them treats for success. They are not housebroken (dogs who go inside-not housebroken) so in your mind-you are dealing with puppies all over again.

Good Luck!!! With this formula we have trained all our dogs in one afternoon; I have also corrected 11 people I work with’s dogs who were not housebroken. It really works.

They are all spayed and neutered. I would hate to have an unaltered dog.

We do not have carpet, and if they are urinating on the throw rug we throw it in the washing machine. Does that get rid of the urine completely?

Crate…they have never been crated but I think they need to be when we aren’t home but even then we only rarely catch them in the act so they could be doing it when we are home too.

It’s not a basement, it’s the 1st floor of the house so it’s been really difficult keeping them out completely. There is no reason for them to be down here but it’s how the house is designed. So it’s very difficult to barricade it off when we need to be using the living space too. I almost wish it was a basement so we could just shut the door and be done with it. I think maybe my dad should put in a half door that shuts and locks and can be opened like a normal door. We also do not have carpet except the throw rug that is maybe 5’x3′ in my brothers room. They poop on wood floor. 😐

It sucks because it’s not really my decision whatever we do. If I go out and buy a kennel, everyone in my family needs to be on board with it. And I am sure my dad would like that better than having to make a door down there which really just wouldn’t work. When you enter my house you go onto the landing, and you either go up or down a flight of stairs so even putting a half door there isn’t practical and will probably look really bad. I just don’t see him doing that anytime soon.

                  Thank you for your ideas

Honestly, if someone isn’t in the room with them, crate em. Only way you can make sure they are not doing it then.

Any chance the hound doggy could be given his own spot out in the yard and the exit to the yard blocked up with a cat flap inserted for the wee doggies to use when they need to do their business? My guess is they object to Mr. Hound and are letting him know this is their turf.
How long has he been with you and how old is he? Could he have incontinence issues that are triggering the others’ behaviour?

Oh no the hound is the best dog here now. He makes our little dogs look like devils. He has perfect bathroom skills. He is 11 I believe.

I was going to say what K&K did, but she laid it all out perfectly. I think the only thing to do is go back to basics with them as if they’re puppies and have them on a set schedule for eating and potty time.
