Hey guys! Okay well I NEED HELP! Not urgent (This does NOT involve the buns) but advice. Okay well today me and my mom were going to the store, and on the way down the street, this ADORABLE dog (6-month old-ish) comes up to the car so my mom obviously stops!! And the dgo keeps following the car. So we completely stop and I get out. WELL, LONG STORY short the dog’s kinda in our house now!
I know it wasn’t really the RIGHT thing to do but …well… I’ve been trying to find it’s owners. I’m gonna contact some friends from down the road and see if they know who’s it is, and I’m gonna make signs. Already tried searching it online! But if it is dumped and I absolutely CAN’T find its rightful owners, then.. IT BE MWINE!<3
But if someone took my dog in I’d be pissed![]()
But anyway, I have a question. How do I KNOW for sure, if someone claims him, that it’s really their dog & they don’t just want it?![]()
I’m just all tied up in questions and don’t know what to do! Well any tips are appreciated! Thanks!!
plus, the street I picked it up from was really dangerous better napped then hit by a car.. ![]()
You could ask them to tell you which vet their dog goes to, then call the vet and ask if they’ve ever seen the dog before. Have you taken the dog to a vet, he may be microchipped ![]()
Good Idea Snowy!
What if they say he’s never been to a vet. I’m afraid lots of people don’t bring there dogs to vets where I live. Urgh.. But hmm thats another idea
I’ll keep that in mind!! ![]()
Definitely get a vet to check for a microchip. And put in notices at local shelters and such, thats often where people go to look for lost dogs

Oh I didn’t expect that, around here almost everyone’s dog is neutered, and vet visits are pretty standard. If they say that they haven’t taken her to the vet ask them where they purchased him ![]()
When folks call you about the dog, have them describe the dog to you. If it was wearing a collar, have them describe the collar. If there is something distinctive about the dog(different colored eyes, odd spots, unusual ears, odd tail, etc..), don’t mention it in the flyer, you can use that to make sure the dog really belongs to the person. Make sure you check in with animal control and your local shelter. You don’t have to take a photo or be specific, just give them the generic type, color, gender, and size of the dog.
I picked up a large dog off the side of the road once. He had been chasing after the car in front of me and when it stopped at the stop sign, he went to the drivers window and stuck his head inside and the person pushed him out and drove off quickly right into the main street. The dog immediately followed the car and almost got hit by a car coming over the hill. I pulled over and called the dog to me. It took me a bit, but I finally got him in my car. I never found his owner and assume he was dumped since the shelter was right down the road from where I saw him chasing the car. I ended up re-homing the dog with my brother and sister-in-law. Bernie(St. Bernard/Hound mix??) is so bonded with them now, I’m glad it worked out! ![]()
Thanks for the tips guys! Tomorrow morning at 9 or so I will have a picture of him if you wanna check it out!!
Also, He is ABSOLUTELY RETRIEVER. Just don’t know what kind. I’m almost sure he has Golden Retriever in him. Tell me if you think so. And tell me what breed you think he is if you dont agree with me about Retriever ![]()
I ditto the distinguishing marks comment! Put only generics on a flyer, and maybe a head shot
good luck!
I work in a rescue centre that takes in stray dogs so I’ll give you the advice we give anyone who finds a dog: first thing is to check for collar and tags, obviously it doesn’t have any or you would have been able to contact any owners already. Next thing is to take it to a vet and get it scanned for a microchip, in the UK any vet or rescue centre will do this for free, not sure if it’s the same in the US.
If no luck with that then the next step is to flyer your neighbourhood and put notices up in shop windows, vet noticboards etc, the information on the flyers should include a headshot of the dog and basic description (also a contact telephone number for yourself!). You could also put the date/time and area found. Try phoning around local shelters and vets to see if anyone has reported a dog missing. The next step is just to wait.
If the dog was in a shelter then you legally have to wait 7 days for an owner to comer forward. After that time the dog can legally be adopted by someone new – check local shelters for the policy in your area. Usually they are more than happy for you to hang on to the dog as it frees up a kennel space for something else.
Good luck!
Here he is! My sister took this picture with him. It’s not a great picture, because my camera’s dead
.
But the picture shows his ears. They’re both speckled
That’s definatly something they can describe, AVA! ![]()
Anyone know what breed he is??![]()
Beagle mix?
looks like a jack Russel terror.
Oh, I guess this pic doesn’t show it very well. He holds his leg like a retriever, too. I will put a better pic up. Not a beagle or jack russel..
I’m guessing lab/jack russel mix. He’s a cutie!
Okay- I knew he had to be some sort of retriever!
When you see the size of his legs… lol! They’re HUGE! lol I’ll put a video collage of good pics on tomorrow!
UPDATE- Today we put up flyers around town- me and my mom. I’m not naming till a week without calls.. I don’t wanna fall TO in love with him! ![]()
Wow, he must be bigger than he looks in the picture.
Hummm… at first glance, he does look like a Jack Russell…but he also appears to have some sort of Pointer in him. If he’s a mix and still a growing puppy, it can be difficult to figure out. A full body shot would make it easier…he is cute! ![]()
UPDATE- sadly someone claimed the dog and came and got him.. as sad as I am I’m happy he went to his rightful owner.
