My bunny Hershey has been on a pretty much all critical care diet for the last few weeks because he has lost so much weight, but I’m starting to think the critical care is what is making him lose so much weight. He poops a lot and it’s not like the round hard ones it’s like long soft ones, I’ve attached some photos below. He is going into the vet Sunday for a post surgery check up, any ideas on if his poop is normal, again he eats pretty much critical care all day and eats some pellets, minimal hay and mint leaves.

I am a first time bunny owner, so I am not too sure. They do look soft and it’s not good that he isnt’t eating much hay. Here’s a post that may help https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/136574/Default.aspx

In the first pic, they look like smushy cecals. But the second photo, I’m not sure. I would try and cut back on the critical care to encourage him to eat hay.

P.s. hope you don’t mind, I posted the photos for you

I’m not a bunny poop expert with regards to a full critical care diet, but am commenting on this to give your post a boost so others will see it.
Is he just not eating the hay on his own?
If he will eat on his own than I could see the critical care as an add on to help encourage weight gain – but not as the sole way to do it, as thats not a long term solution if he will eat on his own.

Those poops don’t look that good. I’d feed him CC as a supplement, not his only source of food. If he’s able to eat, a good idea to help him gain weight is to feed alfalfa based products until he puts on enough weight, and then switching back to timothy.

Agreed with A&B that CC should be a supplement to help weight gain. Wick was underweight and he did a week on Critical Care to gain weight. It was his usual feeding schedule, with the addition of one AM and one PM critical care feeding, where he ate as much as he wanted. His poops were still very normal, so definitely encourage more non-CC food items.

Thank you for all your replies, unfortunately Hershey did not make it; and his abscess infection returned significantly in 2 days between vet post op visits. He also had a severe GI Statis that formed and had a 20% survival rate, myself and my wife made the decision to let him cross the rainbow bridge and be free. He is no longer with us, thank you for al the help and support. Not sure when or if we will adopt another bun!
