Does my rabbit have snuffles?

Hi Everybody,

This is my first time on BinkyBunny.com, so please forgive me if I placed this topic on the wrong forum.

So, I bought a 8 week old bunny yesterday, they said he is a dutch-dwarf (not sure if they meant Netherland dwarf, but he’s probably a mix of Dutch and Netherland Dwarf– which is quite weird, because he cost $100, but I don’t really mind). Please tell me what breed/mix you think he is. He has dutch markings, but he is pretty small.

I really would have liked to adopt a bunny, but I don’t live in the US, and there are no bunny shelters here. 

So, he was fine yesterday when I placed him in his new cage. He took some time to adjust, and then started to eat the hay and the pellets that I placed there. He doesn’t really leave his litterbox though, I think it might be too big (it’s about 6 times his size, but he’ll grow into it). His cage is 2.5 ft x 9 ft (he has plenty of room to run around, but he chooses not to). Anyhow, I noticed today that he has a tint of yellow on his nose, and he’s been sneezing occasionally, about once every 5 minutes (it varies though, sometimes it takes 10 minutes, sometimes it takes 2 minutes).

I have some pictures here. Does this look like the snuffles? 

I am planning on taking him to the vet tomorrow. Also, why did this happen? I gave him unlimited hay and pellets, and a water bowl. I monitored his poop, and it was totally fine- all round, brown, beautiful poops. Nothing in his pee either. He’s acting normally, eating and drinking. There’s nothing on his eyes, as far as I can tell.

Okay, now he has quite a lot of white mucus on his nose (it’s not dripping, its just around his nose). I will definitely get it checked by the vet tomorrow. What do you think it could be?

It could be an upper respiratory infection. Snuffles is not really an actual infection or disease – it’s really just a catch all term for an upper respiratory infection.

It’s good you are having a physical exam done especially getting from a pet store or breeder. Also have the vet do a fecal test to check for coccidia.

Hi, your bun is so beautiful I think you’re right about snuffles. Our little Link had snuffles as a baby, its quite common. The fet should sort you out with some anti biotics, called Baytril, and that will fix him right up.
Congrats on your gorgeous little baby. Owning a bun is so rewarding.

Yes, ask the vet about what may be causing the sneezing and discharge, that does qualify as snuffles, which as pointed out above, is a catch all term for anything that causes a rabbit to sneeze and or have a congested or runny nose. Since you just got the rabbit, it may be something that is not curable but, that the rabbit normally has no symptoms of. Those things are often set off by stress and moving the rabbit to a new home.

Your vet will be able to tell you for sure and, give you the right medicine to treat your new friend.
