So I got to thinking after a few posts triggered my curiosity.

Ophelia had a recent vet visit on Friday, and we all know she is just an absolute stress ball. I was scared she might go into stasis from stress (no particular reason I thought this, I guess just worrying about the possibility). She was back to eating and playing on Friday night, but Saturday seemed a little bit “withdrawn” so I gave her a little simethicone- just in case she had some tummy trouble.

She practically gobbles it out of the syringe, so I figured that it must be flavored or something to make it more enticing. Full disclosure, I tried a dab on my finger and it’s not good lol. So I wondered if you guys bunnies like it too?

I have a hypothesis regarding Ophelia’s total willingness to take it so I’m just taking a poll here to see where that leads me

Bombur does too xD like the minute he smells it he tries to lick it. I feel like putting it in a little doggy dish for him to lick up haha

Wick loves simethicone so much. It could honestly be his enjoyment of the medication that relieves his discomforts, rather than what the medication does…

Bam accepts Infacol on a leaf of lettuce. It’s orange flavored. I’ve bought it in London. The baby simethicone I can get here is worse than disgusting, judging by Bam’s reaction to it. I’ve tasted it though, and to me it just tastes mildly sweet. He absolutely hates it. Metacam is quite acceptable though, and the banana/caramel flavored Bactrim he got last summer was apparently delicious.

So she’s not alone then! I thought she was a total odd ball

Sometimes I give her fresh squeezed juice when I make myself a glass. But I obviously don’t want to give her much, so I just get a few little drops in a syringe and let her have a taste of some fresh pineapple juice. She goes NUTS for it. So whenever I get out a syringe for Simethicone she just gets all excited and gobbles it up. I didn’t know if Simethicone was just well received among bunnies, or if maybe she thought she was getting some pineapple juice!

But since that thought came to mind, I wonder if the juice drops would actually work as a way of desensitizing them to the syringe? What do you guys think? Could it maybe help them with taking meds form a syringe when they are sick, or would they smell that it’s not juice and be totally put off by the syringe?

I think you’re being brilliant. Juice drops could be a very good way to desensitize a bun to a syringe. If you have a small syringe (like 1 ml) the amount of juice you’d give during “training” would be tiny.We don’t want our buns to percieve syringes as harbingers of evil, so training them to have a good feeling about syringes in general could only be good.

When Bam was getting so many meds last summer, I gave them in the order yummy med, yucky med, yummy med, yucky, then finished with yummy. It worked very well. Having a bit of pineaple juice ready between syringes of yucky med would probably work too, esp since not all illnesses require super-yummy banana/caramel flavored meds.

I do have one of those small syringes, so I think I may give that once or twice a week in place of a treat! Like you said, getting them acclimated with the syringe can only be a good thing! I didn’t even realize what I was doing until I noticed that I think SHE was starting to make the association of syringe being good

All my bunnies have loved Zantac, which is mint flavoured here. Luna varies with simethicone, but maybe that depends on how ill she’s feeling. She was not receptive last time before she went into full stasis, but has gobbled on other occasions… in fact, maybe that’s a good pointer for the future.

                          Um, no! LOL

Both of mine absolutely refuse to eat simethicone willingly. :p
