I never saw what they look like in surgery. Did you ever take a pic when there were in surgery? Just wondering

I believe if you google this you may be able to find photos. Generally, vets won’t allow mere humans like us to watch surgeries – I think partly because of liability reasons and partly because owners may find it disturbing to watch.

If I am remembering correctly I think emkvet was there during her rabbit’s surgery because she’s going to be a vet. Maybe ask her?

There are videos on youtube. I usually take a look at any surgery I’m sending my rabbits into so I can get a better understanding of what’s going on.

I do! I’m one of the lucky ones that gets to be there:

Cool! Definitely no for me-I couldn’t see any of my babies like that, I just couldn’t. My vet would allow you to watch, your pet or others, the clinic allows you to be there whenever your pet is having anything done (I dislike those that take them in the back and have you wait!) and your certainly welcome to come observe other surgeries if you are interested in vet schools. I think many vets would be open to that-so if your interested give your vet a call-I bet they wouldn’t mind

We had an Australian member a few years back (I can’t recall her member name for the life of me, other FLs, do you remember?!) who adopted a female rabbit who unexpectedly gave birth about 1-2 weeks after coming to her house. The mama bun had 6 babies, and the member kept all of them and had them spay/neutered. She was in the room for all of their surgeries and shared pictures. I wish I remembered her name because we could probably find the old thread… After about 2 years, she did rehome the babies because 7 rabbits was way too much work.

Whoa, that’s really cool! I would definitely watch if I could, but my vet didn’t even let me in the back room to watch Peppy have her teeth trimmed. I understand why, of course, but it’d be neat to see the procedures.

emkvet, wow that is interesting!! I never would have thought that the rabbits’ paws are held open like that.

I do remember that member (Lisa43). Mainly because there were only about 2 other Australians active on here at the time when I joined. I don’t remember seeing that thread though. It was probably posted before I found the forums.

I think I’d be curious to observe any surgeries but I do admit, it’s a little freaky to see your rabbit positioned like that.

It is weird!!!! Hazel’s spay was definitely more nerve-wracking than the other spay I’ve watched, since she’s my baby. The positioning makes sense though, and it isn’t bad for them, because once they’re under the anesthesia they’re super floppy! It gives the doctor the best direct shot at the uterus and ovaries. That’s how cat and dog spays are done, too!

If anybody has any questions about the procedure (what they do, how it’s done, etc.) or what it’s like to watch, etc. I’d be willing to answer them!

The positioning makes sense absolutely. I guess I was meaning it just reminds me of an autopsy or something. Though in that case there would be less around the animal. Nothing monitoring vitals or the face mask etc.

LISA! Yes, thank you! I knew her member name was her first name, but i just couldn’t recall it for the life of me! I was thinking Dawn, but that was the other member from Australia.
