Zeus needs another sanitary shave. I discovered last night that he’s got some messyness under his tail, his fur is way too dense so shaving it solves the problem.
I called my vet and asked for an ASAP appointment. They said next Wednesday!
I was really polite and just expressed my concern that Zeus couldn’t wait that long, and that I was concerned his skin may get inflamed/infected by then. The vet tech got snippy with me and said “Well we’re all booked” and I asked if there was maybe another vet on staff that could help just this one time. She said “I guess we can try to squeeze you in on Tuesday or something”. One whole day sooner, gee thanks.
I ended up giving up, and called the local vet that I’ve never been to. They do have a vet on staff that does exotics, including bunnies. They’ve never had me as a client before, nor any of my pets. They fit me in on Monday with no problems.
I’m just disappointed, frustrated, and worried. I’ve spent well over $1000 at my vet’s office, I’ve been going there for years and brought 3 different bunnies and my guinea pig there. And they just completely blew me off, and more upsetting, they blew off Zeus’s health and wellness.
Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. The new vet is only 5 mins from my house, my old vet is 45 mins away. At least a shorter trip will mean less stress for Zeusbunny.
I always do a drop off at my vet if I think it’s an emergency or even if it’s not – that way the vet can work my rabbit in between appointments.
Perhaps the new vet will be better for you since he/she is closer though.

Yeah with them being so far away, a drop off isn’t very practical in my case. ![]()
I totally get a vet’s office being booked – they’re busy, they do a good job, so they’re going to have lots of clients and appointments. It’s just the way the tech handled it that bothered me. She really didn’t make any attempt to come up with a compromise.
Staff feeling the pressure of the holidays maybe? Still, sounds as if tech could have been more polite.
As back up, you could see if there’s a experienced person or groomer who works with a local rescue.
Do you know why Zeus is getting this on occasion?

Hmmm, groomer is a good idea. Funny thing is I have a professional grade set of clippers ($200!
). They’re for my horses. But clipping a horse is waaaaaay easier than a bunny!
I don’t know why it’s happening, I’m going to ask the vet on Monday. My original vet didn’t seem too concerned and said it’s common with some of the larger breeds, especially because his hair is kind of medium length.
It’s possible the tech was just being rude, if you talk to the vet they might have a different opinion and scold the tech for it. Worth a shot, if you really liked the vet, or get uncomfortable about the new one.
I know it’s hard to find a good vet. I went all around town finding mine. And I like him a lot. But, it took a lot of searching! Hopefully the new one is good, sounds a lot closer. ![]()
Ruby was a lionhead and had long hair around her privates. I would trim it cuz it would get stained yellow with urine and poos would get stuck there. The trimming helped a lot with this.

Yeah, I really wish I had a direct line for the vet I use – even just leaving a voicemail on her desk phone or something. Oh well I suppose.

Ironically, Hera my lionhead doesn’t have this issue!
None of my lions have ever had that issue either, but I am sure it just depends on the bunny. ![]()

Possibly, but I was under impression this is more a recent thing for Zeus.
And Zeus has been a big bunny a long time!
Perhaps he’s not quite posturing correctly when he goes to pee.
Mimzy needs regular shaves because even when he makes good cecals his residual head tilt makes it hard for him to reach them before he’s smooshed them all over himself.
Could be as Zeus ages his dietary needs change. I found recently that a different bottled water for my bunnies can have this unwanted effect. All three of mine have varying degrees of chronic dysbiosis. I tried everything and finally realized it was the water.
Good luck with the new vet. I hope it works well for you. xx

You’re right, it is a recent thing. It’s only been within the past year or so. I’m hoping maybe a new vet will look at it with different eyes and make a suggestion.

I’ve tried to revamp his diet, it doesn’t seem to have much effect. However, he used to get filtered water from a Brita pitcher… I moved back to plain tap water when we moved from a small town with questionable water. Maybe I need to revisit the filtered water.
Could be arthritis.

Could be arthritis.
I thought about that, too. I tried to find some glucosamine treats or something but no success. Maybe something to ask the vet about.
Oxbow makes glucosamine treats.
