dig boxes so many questions

Okay so Speckles made a giant crater in our matress. She has shown an occasional interest prior to digging, but not much. Not until we found this crater.

So we made her a dig box out of those large storage bins. Filled it with sand and untreated aquarium stones.

Gave it to her today. And she is going nuts for it. Buuuuuuuuuuuut mom and dad are not so nuts about it… Since she literally sits half inside the box, and digs all of the stuff OUT of her box, and onto the floor. 

I’ll be putting a sheet down to catch all of the dug up stuff that she dug from the box. And never using sand again. She seems to LOVE digging in it, but it’s such a pain to clean up. So I’ll be sticking with small aquarium stones from now on.

I’m wondering if I cut the entrance too low, or if she is just being a typical pain in moms butt.

What kinds of dig boxes do you guys use? ((Pics???))

What materials do you use inside. We use pellets for litter so we don’t wanna do that. She had ZERO interest in actual dirt and shredded paper. She actually ate the paper….

This seems to be the best hit, but she is just so… MESSY with it.

Well I came across my bunny pastime by chance!
I used to have a nice jasmine climber growing out of a huge plastic tub on my patio. (Zou’s fenced off area)
As Zou got bigger she started to jump up on this tub (I thought, just to play! D’oH!) and without me noticing happily chewed through the main 4 stems. Oops! So once the rest of the plant had died off, I took the main plant base with its roots out and I didn’t bother removing the pot away straight away.

And then I started finding – as you did – earth splatterings all around it…. like a modern contemporary splash-art painting on the ground….!!
The dog got the blame !

And then I realised what the rabbit was up to! So I took some earth out as it was almost level with the ‘top’ but I still got more earth art. So I took more out, and more art, and more out and so on until there was about 10cm deep of earth in there, It’s enough for her to dig to her heart’s content and low enough for it not to all fly out.
I put a chew stick in there and she spends time trying to get it out with her mouth. As the sides of the flower pot are angled, it’s not that easy to get it out. Lift, drop, lift, drop, lift, drop!  I filmed her, it’s quite funny. She’s very determined!

There’s not that much room as she is big herself but the pot’s only use is for digging so she jumps in and out happily whenever she wants. I guess the closer the walls of the tub are to the dig, the less distance the earth/sand/whatever has to ‘lift off’ in.

Not sure if that helps you and Speckles, but that’s my story.  :o)

I use an extra large enclosed cat litter box. I take off the opening flap and get an 8-inch corrugated tube. I wrap the end of the tube in a folded towl so it stays in the cat litter box opening. The other end rests on a small step stool, tied to it. No sand gets out – ever.

This is Lancelot’s dig box. He treats it well, so I don’t need to tie the end down. I only jamb the entrance in with dish towels. It’s an extra large cat litter box with 8-inch corrugated pipe. Bunny tunnels can be bought at pet stores that are colorful and cheaper than a 20ft piece of corrugated plumbing…

OMG your bunny has a sand box!!! Oh let her keep the sand -that sounds brilliant. Orrrr could you at least post a video for us? It sounds like she’s having a blast.

I think Vanessa and Vienna’s suggestions are great for keeping the sand mess down
