February is Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month!

Have you done anything for your local animal shelter lately?

Unfortunately I have not…but as I see the month is coming to a close, I think I will donate to the House Rabbit Society.

I started volunteering at the Humane Society here, in their Small Animal room

We cleaned out the basement and put up a big cage to foster a bunny! The shelter that we got Sandy and Gracie from have been getting in some rabbits and she was in desperate need for fosters (the shelter is in her home). So we thought we’d help out temporarily and foster a bunny. So I guess we’re helping out that way even though I forgot this was adopt a rabbit month hehe!

I guess I haven’t directly benefitted the shelters, but I visited all the local bunny-selling petstores and given the managers flyers about bunny care for them to post/distribute in the store. All had a positive response, but I asked my mom to go around sometime next week just to see if they actually did do what they said, heh! Who knows, maybe now just a few buns will be saved from the shelter in a few months

Dutchess and I go to most of the Hoppy Hours they have at the humane society. The fee to enter ($3 per rabbit) all go as a donation to the shelter.

We don’t have a rabbit rescue here. I was actually going to ask about that sometime. Like what do you do if there isn’t a rabbit rescue anywhere near you? We do have a humane society here, but they only have dogs and cats there. I don’t support them since they are a kill shelter and they are currently refusing to accept any animals from animal control. Basically, if an animal gets picked up and it isn’t claimed right away, then it gets euthanized. I remember my mom crying over it for days when the announcement was first made. Anyway, it doesn’t give much of an opportunity for people around here to adopt a rabbit or other small animal. After checking with the humane society, we ended up getting Leopold at a feed store. It wasn’t that bad though because they actually do accept older rabbits there for re-homing. They only charge a small fee for those. I think Leopold came from a local breeder though because he cost a lot more money. As for Wooly, he came from a co-worker of mine who was giving him away. I couldn’t stand the thought of him ending up in a bad place.
So what can someone like me do to help? Donate to out-of-state rabbit rescues or something?

Well…it looks like we’re adopting a bunny.  More details to come later this week…

Yup! I’m going to start volunteering as either a feeder or a cleaner at my local HRS shelter.

I wanted to start volunteering at my shelter because I heard they have a lot of bunnies right now but I have to wait until the volunteer meeting in March. My first visit I plan on making all the bunnies treat bags.

I would really like to donate money but right now am just not able to do so.

I have almost three pounds of critical care right now-most unopened…and I’ll never use it (touch wood)…anyone know of a shelter that could use it?
