He usually takes his antibiotics but today he wasn’t having it so I had to hold him to administer. He was doing alright but then the syringe unstuck and released a little to much too fast. He stopped and stuck his face up with his mouth open for a second but then quickly recovered. Is it possible he breathed some into his lungs?? He’s acting pretty normal right now… please help.

Hey mushroomsmom. Having an uncooperative day is tough, but remember rabbits are smaller than you, so don’t feel pressured to do it really fast or use a lot of pressure to get the syringe into the mouth.

Generally, I think it’d be very difficult for a rabbit to accidentally inhale some medicine. Wick’s given antibiotics twice a day for the past 4 months, and I’m sure there may be some doses which weren’t perfect. He seems all right though. If anything, I may keep a towel handy just in case I need to wipe his face. The only thing I know Wick doesn’t like is when I use too much pressure to get it in his mouth. He’s much more cooperative when it’s a more gentle approach and slower syringe depression.

Wick takes Baytril, and no problems. I would imagine many medications which need syringe feed may find themselves accidentally in the nose, even from the rabbit using the tongue to clean itself, so I don’t think you should be too worried. Monitor behavior, eating, and breathing as usual!

I find with Lancelot, the worse he feels the easier it is to syringe feed him anything – food or meds. The better he feels, like this week, the harder it is. WIth critical care, it’s virtually impossible. He spis it all back up. WIth medicine – and he also gets mornign and evening meds – I put the syringe in hsi mouth gently – and squirt quickly. He currently feels good enough to fight me like a little devil. Like Wick said – keep an eye on hsi eating/breahing. When is his next vet checkup?
