Diarrhoea after eating breeder celect paper litter

Ok so Oakley is used to a jumbo ware scatterless tray ( corner with metal grill)
He started to pre over side so I had to get a bigger tray – a cat one. Then I had issues with the pine pellets being mushy and him sleeping in them – so I swapped to paper litter pellets ( breeder celect ) but yesterday he ate a couple
So today I put a plasticy mesh over the litter – which he didn’t eat at all – but he moved it out the way to get the litter again … then did two bouts of runny water poo ( definitely diarrhoea
I immediately removed all litter – cleaned tray and just put hay in it ( since it’s middle of the night here )
After an hour of hay munching his poops now formed thank goodness!
He has intermittent soft stool syndrome and reduced decal intake diagnosed so he doesn’t eat grass or veges. Just oxbow and hay.
I can’t think what else it would be other than the eating of litter (?)

If his poop is normal in the morning now the litter is removed I need sort a new tray … would a cooling rack inside his tray be ok?
I know wire bottoms to sit on aren’t the best but will it really be that bad?
When he had the jumbo corner tray with grill he did sleep up there a bit so I am assuming he will on the cooling rack too … however it’s kind of that or sitting in the litter which I’m sure is more risky after tonight

Btw for the 24hours he was on paper litter prior to diarrhoea he had larger poop and egg shaped
I assume that would be the upset starting from the couple of litter pellets he ate at that stage

Im glad he returned to normal after eating hay! It seems odd that paper pellets could cause diarrhoea. He must be terribly sensitive.
By the way, that brand looks exactly like the bags of paper litter we have hear, called Breeders Choice.

Do you have Kmart there? I saw a litterbox there today that have a plastic grate that sits inside.

Yes we do and I contemplated that box but I’d still have to have litter on top to wouldn’t I? I think someone in the detailed litterbox thread tried a similar one without pellets on the top and it didn’t work as the smell was extreme after 2hours from the wee being on the top sifting tray with no litter….?

Yes his stomach is super sensitive ! Even a tiny leaf of mint or parsley and he’s poop is soft and weird – grass does it too so we are on a nothing but hay and oxbow pellets diet that the vet put him on

I’m going to get one and give it a go… I’ll buy pine pellets again and reswap back from the paper pellets so I can put them on top tray again …. I hope this works !!!
Otherwise I have no choice left but a metal grill ( cookie cooling tray or similar )

They are sold out of the trays… don’t know if they getting more or if they are gone now they said… so I have gone and got wood pellets ( he is eating them too though!) and I’m about to go get some plastic garden mesh and attempt yet another screen

I hope it works this time!
Then tonight I’m going to have to try clean diarrhoea off his bum and legs

That was me But I have a sensitive sense of smell. You could always try litter underneath and hay on top as well

But when he has iss poop the hay makes the whole mess stick to his bum ( issue I have today sigh )
Also sensitive to smell and breathing if it smells too strong ( I have an autoimmune disease and shrunk lungs )
They didn’t have the tray anyway
So I got some plastic garden mesh – going to diy something up very soon then clean poopy but once kids in bed

Thanks all I got plastic garden mesh – turned the edges over so it rests on the sides on it giving it a couple of cm height to fit pellets under it
So far it is working – he can’t eat the pellets much ( he still managed one or two by racking till one pops up through the plastic mesh ) and he is no longer sitting directly on the pellets.
He took to the wood pellets again very well – so no more paper ones to upset his tum

I’m just waiting to see if he is going to give up trying or attempt to eat the plastic / rack the pellets

Fingers crossed this set up works this time!
Being up till 3am with a runny poop bunny then out all day trying to sort a litter set up is no fun!!
