My cat, Moonshine was just diganosed as diabetic on Thursday.  Since then I have researched switching foods, insulin- the different purchasing options for Lantus (expensive) and have looked at a million websites and called pharmacies trying to find the insulin syringe that is highly recommended to measure by 1/4 units (no luck).

Anyone else on here have a diabetic cat?

Home testing is what is recommended to measure his blood glucose- since elevations at the vet are normal due to stress.  So I can hardly wait to draw blood while my husband holds Mooney still- my husband sucks at restraining for anything other than nail trims.  I have a feeling the cat will draw more blood than I will, I guess I will have to put Soft Paws back on him (nail caps).

My oldest cat was diabetic, Sassy. We just had to put him down a few months ago. But he did fine on his shots for awhile, but stopped responding after a while.

Oh Katnip! I’m really sorry to hear about this. I have no experience with diabetic cats, but I’m sending major healthy vibes out to Moonshine and some “figure stuff out” vibes to you!

Keep us posted on what you come up with.

Oh!  I can answer this one!  One of my cats, living at my mother’s, is diabetic.  I was still living there when she was diagnosed.

When we had to give her injections, we just used regular syringes.  Bought them from Walmart in fact.  I was quite surprised at how easy it was to give them to her.  I know I’d never be able to do it to myself!  But for the cat it was as simple as lifting up the skin at the scruff of her neck and injecting it under the loose skin.  Went quite quickly once we got used to it.

We also had to change her food.  The vet gave us a list of recommended foods and we went from there.  No more dry food for her, which she loved.  Now she gets tinned Friskies – any of the varieties that are just pate, no gravy.

Gradually we were able to lower the dosage of insulin and I’m happy to report that her diabetes has been totally controlled by just the food for a few years now!
