Dare devil bunny

Today Finn learned that he can escape from his enclosure by jumping out and onto my bed he then jumps down from my bed and proceeds to get into all kinds of mischief. You may remember Finn from the wipe scare where he was found with the garbage can, he has also escaped from his hutch at my boyfriend’s house, tried to crawl under our dishwasher countless times, and in general gets himself into some kind of shenanigan daily. My question here is does anybody else have themselves a dare devil? If so how do you keep them contained? I liked Finns enclosure because it offered him so much room to run, play, and hide, but I just can’t trust him with anything that has an open top anymore,but it would break my heart if I had to confine him to a small cage.

I think rabbits inherently have the desire to get into as much trouble as possible, especially when it comes to possibly hurting themselves. Olaf has jumped up and over a 3ft. couch arm in order to escape his early x-pen wall and has proven that he doesn’t mind hopping out of the second floor of his current c&c (cubes and coroplast) cage, including at one point getting caught up on tehe edge and dangling from his back legs. (I know, I know. It was horrific but he was miraculously unscathed – I am now a hawk for keeping the lid closed.)

Anyways, if you have an open-top pen I would suggest covering it with a blanket or tarp so he doesn’t think it is open. Some places have oversize covers with elastic around the edges like a big shower cap to stretch over the top. If he is still too daring and tries to escape that, I think you need a tougher cover like a screen or grids tied together with zip ties.

The last, but most costly option, would be to make your own cage out of storage cubes like others have on this site. You can make them as large as you want and use the same grids to make a cover and doors. Definitely look them up for ideas.

Fernando likes to try to escape from the bunny condo/X-pen complex on occasion himself. He led me a merry five-minute chase the other evening before I was finally able to catch him and carry him back to the X-pen, which carrying he didn’t (naturally) much care for. Fortunately, the small size of my apartment also means that there aren’t too places for a mischief-intent bunny to run to! He also likes to jump, but the 42″ X-pen is too high for him to jump over.

It’s a good thing that the bunny condo (based on grid cubes) has a ceiling that can’t be removed. The buns are well-used by now to the ramp between levels (carpeted) in the condo so they hardly ever lose their footing anymore, and when they do they don’t have very far to slide down.

Yes I have a dare devil too! My previous rabbit was nothing like Norman.

I watched him actually climb a plastic mesh baby gate, with all four feet. He jumps right into them as well in hopes of knocking them over, and has succeeded many times. My mom left the top hatch of his condo open while she got something last week and he jumped right out of it, that’s over 3ft. Nothing deters him!

My only solution has been to get more and more inventive with how I secure him. Just last night he was trying to pull down the barrier I’ve built around my entertainment unit with c & c grids. I had to stack all my free weights up against it to secure it from his repeated attacks

Xtina, how is it that our buns are so strong! For tiny little things they can topple a village, I tell you!

If it’s too small for your pen, maybe consider making something similar with sheer fabric and bungee cords or suspenders.
