critical care alternative??

Hello,

One of my bunnies is currently going through GI stasis. I took her to the vet this morning and there is no cause known other than likely ingestion of fur. Eyes, ears, temperature, etc are all fine. She is going through a heavy shed right now so I’m sure that’s what it is. Anyway, she is on metacam and metaclopramid, for pain and gut motility and also received sub q fluids. She still has not eaten and the plan was to give critical care if she still refused to eat. I’m in a bind As I am realizing I don’t have access to critical care quickly, I haven’t had it on hand because we haven’t needed it In so long and I thought I could get it at my local pet supply store and they don’t carry it. my ve is wonderful but it’s a small one and they don’t carry many products there so he couldn’t give it to me either.

Anyway, is it possible to mash up Timothy pellets into a paste and syringe feed that instead? Or is there a better alternative?. I was really hoping she would perk up by now but she is just laying in her litter box. I hate seeing her like this. thank you so much in advance!

Ugh, silly me, called my vet and they have it in the back which is why I didn’t see it. And for anyone else wondering, he also said pellet mash/slurry can work too.

I’m glad your vet had CC after all! And your right, others may wonder, and pellet mash/slurry is an ok alternative, it’s not always possible to get CC.

Thanks everyone. Yes I’ve tried some tummy massage. No luck yet. Once I get my kids to bed, one is 2, and one is 5 months old, and take my full attention all day long I will get to work on Oreo. I’ve done some cc feeding but I’m going to give more. She still hasn’t eaten or pooped well except eating the cc.

She’s never gone this long, I’m so worried.

You can try some baby gas drops (simethicone). Dana Krempel recommends that with stasis in this article, scroll to Mechanical Treatments: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html

It’s a very good article, but don’t try and do an enema yourself. But do the massages, the simethicone and the keeping her warm, rabbits tend to get hypothermic when they are ill. Did she get any sub-q fluids at the vet? Hydration is extremely important since the contents of her intestines needs to be hydrated to move along, and it’s difficult (and may sometimes do more harm than good) to give enough water by mouth.

Thanks bam, yes I have those on hand and usually when I give them she bounces right back in an hour or two..just not this time! She is on metacam and metaclopromide still for pain and gut motility and I figured with the pain relief maybe didn’t need gas drops. I certainly could try.

And yes I have seen that article, thank you very much for pointing it out. Yes she received sub q fluids. She’s been willing to take water when I syringe feed her cc. She actually really wanted it so I kept offering.

Thankfully today she has munched on a little lettuce and some hay, I keep bringing it to her to see if she’ll have some. I haven’t given critical care since this morning since she was willing to eat some food. I’m thinking if she still isn’t up to eating much when dinnertime comes I will give her some more cc. Her poop is not back to normal but I at least saw some this morning, sticky and small and not typical looking but at least things are starting to move. She is acting much better today too, yesterday she just laid in her litterbox almost flat all day, broke my heart. She is laying/sleeping in her normal house today so that’s a good sign. I know she’s not out of the woods yet but some improvement is better than none.

Great that she’s eaten sth on her own and that there’s been poop. It’s awful when your rabbit is ill

Sorry bam, didn’t mean to sound like it wasn’t helpful!! I’ve been through it before, luckily not this bad since she was 5 months or so, she’s 6 now thank you so so much for your advice and help! It’s appreciated! And also for your keeping her in your thoughts! She is munching on some hay right now so that’s a happy sight to me!
