Hello! Before I begin, I want to apologize for bombing you guys with this, it’s much more serious than most things that are posted on here.

So I’ll start by saying that he has IMHA which basically means that he’s been anemic every day of his life and he doesn’t handle anesthesia well at all (near-deaths). He is immunosuppressed due to his medicines (Cyclosporine and Prednisone), so he often gets infections and has a low white cell count.

Whisper was taken to the vet two weeks ago and was fine, but a few days ago he started to get sick very quickly. I found him having one of his “episodes” which consist of fast, shallow breathing and constant cecetropes that he refuses to eat. He usually recovers from these episodes in 4-6 hours, but that came and went and he was no better. He stopped eating entirely, stopped drinking, and was either running around or in a corner breathing quickly. He would be breathing quickly even if he was in a cage all night. I got him into the vet the next day and he was diagnosed with an ear infection (nothing new with him, he’s had at least 20, in the past he had a cross lateral resection so that we are able to access his ear canals). He also has a respiratory infection that he picked up from the vet’s office (immunosuppressed) and one of my other rabbits has it as well. The other rabbit was cultured, so we should know what it is soon. As if that wasn’t enough, he also has recent dental disease that has caused yellowing of his upper incisors and overgrowth (they are still in his mouth) and uneven premolars. His teeth have been hurting him to the point where he isn’t eating much… I’m having to force-feed him.

His breathing still hasn’t fixed itself and because it’s so fast he is constantly hot (temp is close to a fever), so we put him on Tramadol for pain in hopes that he’s breathing like that because he is painful (he can’t have Meloxicam because of his other meds), Baytril for the respiratory infection, otic gel for the ear infection, and Vetri DMG as a booster. If he is still breathing poorly by Monday, we will take him in for a full blood panel, CBC, and X-Rays. He’s also still pooping cecetropes often and sitting on them or lying down on them. There have been at least seven clumps of them in the past eight hours. He is eating a little bit on his own now, but his teeth are preventing him from eating more (I know it’s his teeth because he begs for food and then tries to and can’t eat it. While I know trimming the incisors would help matters, when he is healthy he has a 50/50 chance of making it out of the procedure and right now he can’t even breathe normally. So his body is completely overwhelmed with infections and I don’t know what else I can do to help my little boy in his newest fight. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Also – can I get pictures on here somehow? I have pictures of the cecetropes and the teeth.

I’m going to say this as gently as possible…

If your bunny is constantly suffering with episodes (it sounded like they happen reasonably often) and keeps getting sick from a host of other things… Maybe it would be best to put him down.

I mean, I didn’t understand EVERYTHING you said, but if you’re spending a lot of money and he gets sick a lot, maybe his life isn’t enjoyable anymore.

I mean, this is totally your decision and a very personal one. I apologize if I seem a little quick to give up hope or don’t completely understand your situation. Best wishes.

Is it just the teeth towards the front that are the issue?

LBJ10, the premolars are different heights, and we haven’t looked at the molars yet due to his anesthesia intolerance. However, we have multiple skull X-Rays that have been taken throughout his life due to bad ear infections… so we can take one without anesthesia this week and compare the teeth and teeth root changes. He’s had good teeth for almost all of his life… this is recent as of less than a few months ago.

First, I’m so sorry for you and your bunny. This is very stressful, I’m sure. Can you syringe feed him critical care?
