Our bunny, Bunnius, passed away recently and my kids begged me to “just go and look at bunnies” because they missed her so much.  Of course, I was kidding myself when I said we were only going to look and we ended up coming home with a little guy who has been named Moonpaw after a Redwall character.  He’s a 12 week old mini lop.  So far we’ve just left him alone and he’s becoming a little bolder in his explorations.  I did have a question.  He is completely white with blue eyes.  I know in dogs that is associated with health issues like deafness or blindness and I was wondering if that was the same with bunnies.

He’s beautiful! BEW’s are simply goregous! And I love the name because I love Redwall I hope it suits him!

As far as I know it’s literally just the coloring and nothing to do with their health. Sirius&Luna has a BEW lionhead named Nimbus, and Sarahthegemini has a BEW named Buttercup. I’m sure they’d be able to tell you more on that. But from what I’ve seen both buns are perfectly healthy

He is gorgeous ! And those ears are so cute!

The only thing is many lops get chronic ear infections as my lop does, but the vet can give you a flush to do every couple of days to keep those ears healthy. But I don’t know any health issues with BEWs

Interestingly I saw this question posted on a rabbit facebook group earlier in the week, and there seemed to be some consensus that BEW WERE more likely to be deaf, and quite a few people had deaf BEWs. I think lops are also more prone to hearing problems. My BEW lionhead can hear perfectly, but my VM black mini lop (so he carries the BEW gene) is deaf.

Anyway, he’s gorgeous and looks super chilled!

I haven’t really seen anything to make me think he is deaf or blind, but my sister has a white, blue eyed dog that is deaf and we did a bunch of reading up on it and the genetics so it was on my mind. Is that something they check for at a vet visit? This little guy will need to go in the not too distant future to get neutered. With the dog it was easy to check because they will be more responsive to sounds so I just hid around a corner and banged on pots and pans and the dog didn’t react, then a vet confirmed she was deaf, but I feel like bunnies are less reactive to noises, or just freeze in response.
So far this little guy is just supremely chill, but he’s new and we’re pretty much just leaving him alone to adjust so his personality isn’t really showing much yet.

My blue eyed white lop has perfect hearing and vision for a bunny. What I mean by that is, she hears what she wants and ignores what she wants Haha! No but seriously her ears and eyes are fine. She DOES have a sensitive tummy but I don’t think that’s related to her colouring (my blue eyed black bun also has tummy/bowel issues and they’re both litter mates so I think it’s genetic)

Moonpaw is a lovely name and he is a gorgeous boy!

So cute!!!! And what an adorable name!!!!

I’ve heard that as well about bew animals. Never read any research or science behind it, though. A BEW horse I take care of is deaf.
