        Hi all,

I have a neighborhood cottontail that always comes into my backyard in the evenings. He gets in under the gate. It’s AZ, so I leave water out for the birds and rabbits that come by. He seems to love the water and loves laying on the grass. My question is, when he’s here at night, should I leave the outside lights on. They are pretty bright. I also have another light by the gate. I would think he would want it on to see any predator coming through. But I don’t want to have all the lights on if it stresses the lil guy out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I may be over thinking it

          Hi GregHouse81! 🙂

I don’t think you need to leave the lights on, rabbits have a very keen sense of smell and have very sharp hearing, so he would probably be able to sense a predator. 🙂

Lights at night are not really what rabbits are interested in. If there is extra light  they can see predators better, but they also become more visible themselves to predators, which is part of the reason why rabbits are crepuscular (crepuscular means most active at dusk and dawn).

It’s very sweet of you though, to want to help the wild buns! You could do a few trial runs and see if they prefer light to darkness. Rabbits are a type of animal that does well in urban areas, in spite of city life being noisy, full of traffic and artificial lights.
