Cost of neutering

This will probably be more relevant to uk members but any input is appreciated! I’ve been ringing around a few vets and am really surprised at the price of castration for a rabbit. Both vets were around the £85-£87. Does that seem about average on other peoples experience? Also both vets I spoke to offered a ‘healthy pet plan’ where you basically pay a ten pound fee every month and it entitles you to vaccinations, a percentage off the neutering, nails clipped, health checks…one even had free food or hay every month. Has anyone signed up to this and do you think it is worth it?

I’ve also read a couple of threads on here mentioning the need for a specialist vet for rabbits. Does anyone know if that is applicable in the UK? It doesn’t seem so from just ringing my two local vets, they didn’t hesitate when I asked about neutering a rabbit so I think I’m ok with just a normal vets!

I’m in the UK and my vets charged just under £50 plus VAT and he was given a motility drug injection so the price included that as well as a 24 hour pain killer injection. I can’t remember the exact price but it was under £100 so your price quote sounds about right to me. 

I had leftover oral pain killers from my girl’s spay (she was spayed only 10 days before my boy) so I didn’t have to buy any but that would cost around a tenner. 

I go to a ‘normal’ vets, rabbits in the UK aren’t considered exotic so as long as your vet is knowledgeable about bunnies, I wouldn’t worry. All I will say tho is if the vet tells you to fast him prior to surgery, find someone else.

At my vets, I think cats are the cheapest to neuter and rabbits are the most expensive  (out of cats, dogs and rabbits)

Edit: I’ve no experience with the healthy pet plan scheme but it sounds pretty good. I have my bunnies insured but of course insurance doesn’t cover regular health checks, vaccinations and neutering/spaying. It’s great for emergencies tho!

I’d always recommend a rabbit specialist when it comes to surgery etc. For things like wellness checks and vaccinations you can go to almost any vet that sees rabbits, but for complications and rabbit specific problems such as stasis and dental issues, surgery etc, I’d always try to see either an exotics vet or a very rabbit savvy vet, not just a vet who sees rabbits.

I’m afraid I can’t help you with neutering costs, I’m sure Australian prices will not be comparable to UK prices

It’s very important to have a vet that knows their stuff with rabbits, but in the UK an exotics vet usually refers to birds and reptiles. I don’t know if veterinary education is different here but it seems most vets understand rabbits. Unless I’ve just been very lucky?!

Here in Australia rabbits are classed as exotics along with birds and reptiles. While most vets will have a basic working knowledge of rabbits, many also do not. The vet I see is not an exotic specialist, however she is highly recommended in regards to rabbits , they get a lot of rabbits in their clinic and also treats the rabbits of a local rescue group. We do have an specific exotic specialist, but it’s about a half hour drive for me, whereas my other vet is only 10 minutes. For something more major and very complex I may go to the exotic specialist but my vet knows rabbits well enough to treat diagnose and treat stasis correctly, perform desexing etc. Not all general vets can do that on rabbits very well.
