Little Boston had some eye irritation when I got him a week ago – vet thought possible irritation from the sawdust so did I
However he gets matting ( tiny but twisted so it pulls at his skin ) in the eye corner of both eyes ) I don’t see eye discharge but I’m assuming there must be to cause the matting I presume
I had noticed it in one eye two days ago so I cleaned it with just water on a wash cloth but today I noticed mats in the other eyes corner so I made a solution 2 cups water to 1/2 teaspoon salt and using a sterile new cotton ball for each eye I wiped them as I read on old threads and other forums
        Should I do this 3 times a day ?
I want to try at home for a couple of days as it’s Friday afrtoon here so my rabbit vet isn’t back on til tues

Could be tear duct issues, teeth issues also spring to mind as they often cause eye problems at all. If you’ve changed from the sawdust and he’s still having it it may be worth getting it thoroughly check out.

Wiping the discharge away is fine, but it won’t treat the cause.

I don’t know… neither of the vets I take Lancelot to can diagnose his teary eyes. You won’t always notice the discharge if he is wiping it away. The dried matts are a sign though. Check the inside of his paws for the same dried fur from where he wiped his eyes. Lancelot also wipes his eyes on his stuffy while he is grooming it. If I have Lancelot quarantined, I use distilled or saline water with a warm cotton ball to wipe his eyes – as often as I can possibly manage, or he will start losing facial fur. When he is with Guin, she keeps his eyes groomed, and he doesn’t lose fur. You could take him for a checkup – could be a blocked tear duct, or an infection, or dental, but I would think the saw dust would be out of his eyes by now.

Oh I wasn’t thinking they still irritated from sawdust I was thinking possibly the infection or conjunctivitis started from then or the irritation then made his eyes more vulnerable at the time ( him wiping them with his paws as they irritated – contamination etc etc)
However the irritation was def on the mend and almost completely gone then first sign of the one eye having a mat in corner was 3 days ago and other eye was 1day ago so who knows…

I’d have it checked out. Antibiotic eye drops should clear it up. If not, then you know it’s something else and will need to be explored further. Most people just try eye drops first though since this is something that can be difficult to diagnose. Unless, you know, it’s very obviously conjunctivitis (red, swollen, gooey). But often times, it isn’t really obvious.
