I have a mini lop who will be 1 around april. She is litter box trained and has been since she was about 3 months old, with mistakes being rare. But I do notice that occasionally for about a week everymonth or two I really have to watch her because she seems to get very territorial and want to sit on the highest part in the living room and at times she has peed on the couch. But lately there have been no mistakes, great bunny. But the past few days, when I let her out of her cage she takes of to where I put her celery when she gets out and as she is hopping lil poops will fall out and its like everywhere she is going she leaves a trail. I haven’t been able to let her out much the past few days because of this. And she also has a very strong smell lately. Her cage is in my bedroom and thats the only time I smell it is when I go in there and I have cleaned it several times and don’t know wahts going on, any ideas? I also want ot ahve her spayed, will that still be ok even though shes gonna be 1 in april? Will the chance of her getting cancer still be decreased at her age? thanks

Hi Daisy, you really actually have been rather lucky with these issues happening only occasionally overall. but most common answer to what’s happening is she’s just being a typical unspayed female. This also makes sense regarding her behavior. Not unsual. Spaying is not too late right now, and help prevent cancer. Since the high rate cancer is in the reproductive organs, then spaying will help prevent that.

But just be sure to get a rabbit savvy vet. Keep us updated.

Is the smell a normal thing that comes along with unspayed rabbits?

oh yeah. Usually males are more pungent, but females can also give out their "hormonal messages" through their urine AND they add an extra smelly message of goo onto their territorial droppings.

EDITED:  I forgot to add that some bunnies that get extra smelly may have a couple of other reasons, something new in their diet – like basil, and/or their anal scent glands may need to be cleaned.
