        Hey bunny lovers,

I have a quick question.  I know the cold weather is almost over, but I want to get the information while I can so I can get a head start on doing things better next year.

How do you clean, more importantly *rinse* your bunny’s cage in the cold weather?  I scoop the soiled bedding out of my bunny’s cage every day, then at the end of the week I empty the whole thing out, scrub it down with white vinegar or dawn (sometimes soak it) then rinse thoroughly outside with the hose.  Obviously, that is impossible to do in the dead of winter.  I have been using my own method during the colder months, but I feel like there has to be a better/cleaner way.  Just curious, how did you manage?

I just take some Nature’s Miracles on a damp rag and wipe the cage thoroughly then wipe with a dry rag, and finish letting it air dry. It takes like 10 minutes to “wash” and dry, and then I air dry it while the boys are playing and keep the door shut so they can’t sneak in. No need for taking the whole thing apart and killing myself over it. I only did something like that when they had mites.

My boys also have litter boxes, so they don’t need any bedding on the bottom of their cages to scoop up or clean. Bombur is incontinent, so if he pees I just spot clean while he’s out of his cage.

Mine don’t have a traditional bunny cage, but they have a large under the bed storage box as a litter tray, that I empty every few days, and once a week or so after emptying it I swill it out in the shower and scrub it with a sponge and pour it down the toilet. I don’t have an outside at all, so shower is my only option

Mine don’t have cages but when they did, they didn’t have bedding in the cage so all I had to do was clean litter trays daily by emptying, wiping with a piece of kitchen roll and refilling. The cage itself never needed scrubbing, I just swept.

Sweeping and wiping takes care of things here, too. I keep a tiny hand broom and sweep up excess hay and stray poops to dump in her litter box when I’m about to empty it, and use either vinegar or an enzyme cleaner on stains.

If you need to wash it down, you might consider buying a small hand steamer. They don’t get things very wet, but due to the heat, might melt any soft plastic parts. They can kill bacteria, supposedly, if used according to instructions, so could be used to clean up after a sick bunny.
