  New pet owner here. Researched lots and use Kaytee Care & Clean litter/bedding in a dishpan. 1/2 the pan is refilled with unlimited hay daily. The other 1/2 has a little layer of hay on top of the bedding. She stands on that side to eat, and poo and pee. She’s awesome at using it & trained herself! It’s so gross to clean, though. Once or twice a week I empty it. A lot of soiled & smelly bedding sticks to the bottom and I need to wipe it-yuck-then rinse out. (It never smells until I empty, so that’s awesome!)
  
  I’ve read not to use woodchips or anything, and that it’s not good for their feet to have the tray below to catch their droppings because it’s not good for their feet to keep being on the metal cage floor.
  
  What am I doing wrong? Or is this correct and supposed to be gross?

  Change it more often. Once a week is a long time to go in my opinion, I change my bunny’s trays daily.

  The soiled area, especially the wet litter, should be removed daily or every other day at the most. You can add a little extra litter if needed, otherwise, you can pull some dry litter into that area.

  So glad she’s taken to using the litter box so well! I agree with the above. I also prefer to use Aspen Supreme (or any wood pellet litter) because you can shake it up a few times between cleanings so the dry litter will absorb the wet (and occasionally scoop the really soaked stuff). I usually change mine every three days.
